Rebels Total a Season-High 48 kills
OXFORD, Miss. – After a three-week layoff, Ole Miss put up a strong fight against No. 8 ranked Missouri in a 3-2 loss Friday from the Gillom Center.
The Tigers came out hot in the first set with six kills in their first eight points to lead 8-2. After a Rebel timeout, setter Gabby Easton recorded her first kill of the match to break up an 8-0 Mizzou run. Missouri led by as many as 13 in the set, before Easton quieted the momentum with her second kill off a quick tip with an assist from outside hitter Lauren Thompson. A kill from outside hitter Anna Bair held off Mizzou from taking the set point at 24-12, but the Tigers ultimately sealed the set win with their 13th kill of the match.
In the second set, the Rebels began to find their mojo with an early kill from right side Samantha Schnitta to tie things up at 2-2. In a back-and-forth battle that resulted in six ties in the set, Ole Miss began to find their way back after trailing 19-16 by capitalizing off of Tiger errors. A kill from middle blocker Aubrey Sultemeier gave the Rebels their first lead of the set at 21-20 and after two kills from Missouri, Ole Miss fired back with two in a row of their own to tie up the set at 23 all. An attack error by Mizzou, followed by an ace from Thompson gave the Rebels the set victory at 25-23.
Ole Miss began the third set with a strong presence at the net with two kills and an ace from Bair, followed by a block from middle blocker Payton Brgoch to lead 4-2. However, Missouri took off on a 12-0 run that was eventually ended by a kill from libero Maggie Miller. The Rebels were unable to climb their way back as the Tigers quickly went on a 6-1 run to close out the set at 25-13.
The fourth set continued Bair's strong day on the outside with yet another kill for her 13th of the match. Back-and-forth attack errors tied up the set at 3-3 and then at 6-6. A kill from Easton put the Rebels back in control to tie up the set at 8-8. Outside hitter GG Carvacho added to her career-high kill day with two straight to extend the lead by three at 12-9. Bair tacked on another two kills to help the Rebels maintain their lead at 19-17, while it was Carvacho who closed things out for the Rebels with her sixth and seventh kills of the set for a 25-19 win, forcing a decisive fifth frame.
With the Rebels battling into the fifth set for the first time all season, Missouri started off the on a 3-0 before being broken up by a Bair kill. After keeping things tight early, Ole Miss was unable to keep pace with the Tigers as they took off on a 9-0 run to take the set 15-4 and ultimately the match at 3-2.
