Rebel Men Up to No. 17 in Week Two USTFCCCA National Rankings

Ole Miss Men Swept Top-Three Spots at SEC Championships Last Week
NEW ORLEANS – After putting together an impressive individual podium sweep at last week's SEC Championships, the Ole Miss men's cross country team moved up two slots to No. 17 in the Week Two USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll Rankings released on Tuesday afternoon.
The poll was not conducted during the first month of the shortened 2020 season, but will be released at least three more times prior to the NCAA Division I Championships that have been rescheduled to March 15, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ole Miss has now been ranked in 35 consecutive men's polls, as well as 41 of the last 46 dating back to 2014. Additionally, the Rebel men have been at least receiving votes in 44 of the last 46 polls.
The Rebel men recorded the first 1-2-3 men's sweep at the SEC Championships since 2017 and just the 10th overall since the conference records began in 1965, with junior Mario Garcia Romo (first, 23:32.9), sophomore Cole Bullock (second, 23:34.3) and senior Waleed Suliman (third, 23:34.3) all crossing the line within two seconds of each other. The trio surged ahead over the final 3K thanks to a charge led by Suliman, helping propel Garcia Romo to become just the third Rebel to ever win an SEC Cross Country Champion behind Pablo Sierra (1992) and Barnabas Kirui (2006, '09, '10).
Ole Miss is also receiving votes in the Week Two USTFCCCA National Women's Coaches Poll released on Tuesday. The Rebel women put together another solid conference meet of their own, finishing third overall in the team standings and holding off a late charge from Kentucky for Ole Miss' fifth consecutive top-three finish. Prior to 2016, the Rebel women had never finished in the top-three of an SEC meet.
Senior Anna Elkin led the way again, earning her first career All-SEC honors on the Second-Team with an eighth-place finish at a 16-second 6K PR of 20:15.9. Fellow senior Victoria Simmons earned her second straight Second-Team honor with a 14th-place showing at 20:37.8. Senior Emma McClellan also had a career day, notching a 26-second PR in 27th place at 20:55.2. Other Rebel scorers included Clio Ozanne-Jaques in 28th (20:58.7) and Ryann Helmers in 29th (21:02.4).
Ole Miss and the rest of the country now waits for spring, with the anticipated beginning of the indoor track season in January, as well as the rescheduled NCAA Cross Country Championships in March.
