Sophomore Shoots 1-under 71, Ole Miss Level Par as a Team
RIO GRANDE, P.R. – The first round of the new decade is in the books for Ole Miss Men's Golf in Puerto Rico. The Rebels sit in seventh as a team at even par after the first 18 holes at Rio Mar Resort's River Course.
Ole Miss led the field in pars with 62 on day one, while playing the par 4s and par 5s at even par as well. The Rebels sits seven shots back of first place No. 2 Oklahoma (-7).
"We have plenty of positives to take away from today," head coach Chris Malloy said. "We had three guys get out and play solid but just couldn't get that final counting score. There is no doubt in my mind that we will move up the leaderboard over these next two days."
Sarut Vongchaisit paced the Rebels on the leaderboard Sunday, firing a 2-under 70 with a trio of birdies. The sophomore got off to a good start, making birdie on his first hole of the day, the par-4 fifth, before making his first and only bogey on the par-3 seventh. He played the last 15 holes bogey-free with a pair of birdies on the back nine to land in the top-10 overall following the first 18.
Veeti Mahonen turned in a 1-under 71 round with two birdies and a lone bogey. The freshman is tied for 18th overall, playing his first 13 holes bogey-free before his only miscue on the par-4 second hole. His 15 pars ranked second in the 75-man field. He has shot four straight rounds under par dating back to last fall and his sixth place performance in Hawaii.
Jackson Suber matched Mahonen's round today with his own 1-under round. The sophomore got off to a tough start with a double-bogey and a bogey on his first two holes, but he rallied to make a team-high five birdies the rest of the way to get into red figures.
Charlie Miller and Brody Blackmon each shot 4-over 76s and are tied for 57th overall.
The second round begins Monday morning with a 6 a.m. CT shotgun start. The Rebels will be paired with Maryland and Marquette.
