Underclassmen Guide Men’s Tennis to 4-2 First Round Win in Blue Gray

2/21/2020 | Men's Tennis

The Rebels downed Fresno State 4-2 and will advance to the second round

MONTGOMERY, Ala.   --  Led by their underclassmen roster, No. 20 Ole Miss Men's Tennis (7-1) advances to the second round of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic Friday, downing Fresno State 4-2 at Lagoon Park.

The squads began with singles action due to weather, where sophomore Simon Junk continued with his impressive win streak, picking up his eighth straight victory in quick fashion, winning 6-1, 6-1 and getting the Rebels on the board.

Freshman Lukas Engelhardt soon followed, turning in scores of 6-4, 6-2 on Court 6. Ole Miss look poised for a sweep after classmate Nikola Slavic grinded through a 7-2 tiebreaker in the second set to win 6-4, 7-6 and put the Rebs up 3-0.

After dropping his opening set via tiebreaker, junior Finn Reynolds battled back with a 6-2 second set to force a third, but ultimately fell and put the Bulldogs on the board.

Fresno State continued to threaten, adding a second point and trimming the lead to just one after senior Tim Sandkaulen, ranked No. 55 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Rankings, fell in back-to-back 7-3 tiebreaks.

For the second consecutive match, all eyes turned to sophomore Jan Soren Hain, who delivered yet another clinch after prevailing in a three-setter, rallying back after dropping his second set in a 7-4 break.

The Rebels head into Saturday with an advantage, picking up the doubles point against second-round opponent Princeton (#27) late Friday afternoon.
