Rebels Rout Jackson State, California Baptist
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss kept the runs coming all day long on Friday, opening up the Ole Miss Classic with a pair of comfortable victories over Jackson State and California Baptist at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
The Rebels (8-10) demonstrated their patience in both games, drawing 17 total walks, while also taking three hit-by-pitches. On the other side, the trio of Ava Tillmann, Molly Jacobsen and Savannah Diederich surrendered just one free pass.
Jessica Puk had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a pair of RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Puk also drew three walks on the day, finishing with a .857 on-base percentage.
GAME ONE | Ole Miss 8, Jackson State 0
The Rebels made quick work of Jackson State (6-9) in the early game, jumping out to a big lead before salting the game away in the seventh, taking an eight-run lead to bring the run rule into effect.
Tillmann picked up the win, allowing just one hit over her five complete innings, tallying one strikeout and one walk.
An Autumn Gillespie hustle play in the first inning gave Ole Miss an early lead, with the senior turning on the jets and scoring all the way from second on a slowly hit fielder's choice to the JSU second baseman.
With an early advantage in tow, the Rebels busted things open in the third. Gillespie got the scoring started with an RBI singe up the middle, with Kelsha Loftin coming home and Nyomi Jones also scoring when the throw to the plate was high and wide. A few pitches later, Jessica Puk turned on a pitch and smoked a two-run blast over the left field fence. Later on, Mikayla Allee dropped a single down the right field line, scratching Abbey Latham across and bringing the score to 6-0 at inning's close.
Following a pair of scoreless innings on defense, Ole Miss iced the game in the fifth. Amanda Roth got the fun started with a towering solo bomb to left field, bringing the eight-run rule within reach. After Tate Whitley walked, Gillespie snuck a triple inside the right field line, bringing Whitley all the way around for the walk off.
GAME TWO | Ole Miss 8, California Baptist 2
In the second game of the twin billing, Ole Miss avenged its loss earlier in the season to California Baptist (5-12), blowing by the Lancers 8-2 after falling behind by a run early.
Jacobsen was awarded the win in the circle, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Diederich came in for the final inning, striking out the side.
California Baptist took the lead right from the word go, finding some holes for three-straight hits to leadoff the game. However, Jacobsen kept the damage to a minimum, picking up back-to-back strikeouts to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of the Lancers.
Ole Miss responded immediately, loading the bases with a pair of walks sandwiching a hit-by-pitch. After back-to-back strikeouts it looked as though the Rebels may fail to capitalize but a two-out double down the left line by Sydney Gutierrez pushed the home team in front, plating a pair.
The Rebels took advantage of some wild pitching from CBU's Kerisa Viramontes to add to the lead in the second despite not registering a hit. Ole Miss drew three walks in the frame, with Loftin scoring on a wild pitch and Gillespie coming home soon after on a passed ball.
Ole Miss utilized some small ball to add on in the third, again scoring without the benefit of a hit. Paige Smith drew a leadoff walk, with Taylor Bachmeyer coming in as a pinch runner. Bachmeyer moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch, scoring shortly thereafter via a squeeze bunt from Allee.
The Rebels failed to score for the first time in the fourth but got right back to business in the fourth. Gutierrez came through with her second RBI knock of the game, roping a triple to right-center to bring Puk around. Allee followed with a single up the middle, bringing home Gutierrez.
After CBU cut into the lead with a solo home run in the sixth, the Rebs responded to get the run right back in the home half as Jones scooted home on a throwing error after advancing to third on a Puk fly out.
Diederich entered in relief in the seventh and slammed the door shut, posting a perfect inning with three strikeouts.
