Hain clinched the Rebels’ second Top 20 win in their last three matches
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- After delivering a thrilling comeback clincher for the Ole Miss Men's Tennis team, sophomore Jan Soren Hain has been tabbed with SEC Player of the Week honors, as announced by the conference office Wednesday.
Hain's victory provided the Rebels with their second Top 20 upset in their last three matches, as Ole Miss downed then-No. 20 Oklahoma State in front of a near capacity crowd last Friday in Oxford.
After dropping his opening set, Hain took three straight games to take the second set 6-4 and force a third set, where he continued to carry the momentum, picking up the opening game. A beautifully placed drop shot from Hain pushed him ahead once more, up 4-3, and he held serve to pull off the upset and record his fourth career clinch.
Hain was dynamic and finished strong, not surrendering a point in his final game as he registered the first ranked win of his collegiate career, defeating Oklahoma State's Dominik Kellovsky (ranked No. 91), 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
He and classmate Simon Junk also provided the clinch for the doubles point, taking down the Cowboys' duo 6-3.
The award is the first of his career for Hain, a product from Wetzlar, Germany.
UP NEXT
Ole Miss will next return to the court for the prestigious Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala., on February 21-23. The Rebels pulled off another thrilling upset in the event last year, taking down then-No. 16 Alabama en route to the finals, where they fell 4-1 to Arizona.
