Rebel Linebacker One of 14 SEC Student-Athletes Represented
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the second consecutive year, Ole Miss linebacker MoMo Sanogo is among 14 Southeastern Conference student-athletes who have been chosen to represent their team and institution as a member of the SEC Football Student-Athlete Leadership Council.
One representative from each SEC institution makes up the Council, which will hold its annual meeting at SEC headquarters in Birmingham on Friday and Saturday.
Sanogo started the first game of the 2019 for the Rebels before injuring his ankle early in the Arkansas game. The injury forced the soon-to-be redshirt junior to miss the entire 2019 campaign.
The Plano, Texas, native started all 12 games at linebacker for Ole Miss during the 2018 season, led the Rebels with 112 total tackles on the season. He is one of only two Rebels over the last 13 years to record at least 100 tackles in a season. Sanogo was the only Rebel since at least 1998 to record two 16-plus tackle games in the same season. His 9.3 tackles in per game in 2018 ranked third in SEC.
The Football Leadership Council is one of three components of the SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Council. The other two components are the Men's and Women's Basketball Leadership Councils. Student-Athlete Leadership Councils were introduced for the sports of football and men's and women's basketball, which, in addition to the conference's longstanding Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), provide student-athletes with additional opportunities to engage with campus leaders and conference office staff. The councils serve as a conduit of communication to the conference office on issues related to student-athlete experience and student-athlete wellness.
Agenda items for the group this weekend include a meeting with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, a review of NCAA and SEC legislative items, open discussion on topics submitted by members of the Council, and engagement with football officials on rules of the game, student-athlete/referee interaction and careers in officiating. Former University of Kentucky student-athlete and three-time NBA All-Star Antoine Walker will visit the group and lead a discussion on financial literacy and education.
The student-athletes who comprise the SEC Football Leadership Council are: Mac Jones (Alabama), Jordan Silver (Arkansas), Kameron Brown (Auburn), Kaiir Elam (Florida), Kearis Jackson (Georgia), Josh Paschal (Kentucky), Avery Atkins (LSU), MoMo Sanogo (Ole Miss), Kobe Jones (Mississippi State), Larry Rountree III (Missouri), Ryan Hilinski (South Carolina), Alontae Taylor (Tennessee), Andre White Jr. (Texas A&M) and Cam Robinson (Vanderbilt).
