Gnam Leads Rebels on Day One in Mexico

Sophomore Shoots 2-under 69 in First Round of Cabo Collegiate
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – The No. 32 Ole Miss men's golf team went 2-over on day one of the Cabo Collegiate, sitting in a tie for eighth after the first 18 holes at Cabo del Sol's Cove Club.
The Rebels got off to a rough start, but birdies down the stretch led Ole Miss to turn in a 2-over 286 to stay just eight strokes back of No. 14 Arizona, No. 25 Oklahoma State, and No. 13 Baylor, who are all at 6-under atop the team leaderboard.
"I was very impressed with our guys today," head coach Chris Malloy said. "We didn't get off to a great start, but the guys hung in there and salvaged our round to give us a chance going into the final two rounds. Jackson (Suber) and Sarut (Vongchaisit) have carried us all year long, so it was great to see some other guys step up when we really needed them. That's what great teams do."
Jack Gnam paced the Rebels on the leaderboard with a 2-under 69, the fourth-lowest round of the day in the field of 80 players, and is in a tie for eighth. He took control of the par 3s, playing them 2-under to lead all golfers. The sophomore made bogey to start his round on the par-4 eighth, but went bogey-free his next 10 holes with a pair of birdies. His front nine started with a bogey, but he finished strong by going birdie-birdie to end in red figures.
Charlie Miller is tied for 25th after an even par 71, his third-straight round of par-or-better this spring. The Jackson, Mississippi, native carded three birdies on day one, including two on the back where he went bogey-free.
Veeti Mahonen shot a 1-over 72 and is in the top-40 overall. The freshman was 2-over through 15 before going birdie-eagle on Nos. 3 and 4 to get into red figures. Mahonen made back-to-back bogeys to turn in a 1-over round.
Jackson Suber is tied for 54th after a 3-over 74, while Sarut Vongchaisit is in a tie for 60th followign a 4-over 75.
Brody Blackmon, competing as an individual, shot an even par 71 and is tied for 25th overall.
The second round begins Monday morning with a 10 a.m. CT shotgun start. Ole Miss will be paired with No. 50 Arkansas, No. 47 Florida State and No. 20 Vanderbilt.
