Softball Captures Ole Miss Classic Crown with 5-2 Win Over CBU

3/1/2020 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss jumped all over California Baptist early on Sunday, riding a four-run first inning to a 6-2 victory over the Lancers to capture the 2020 Ole Miss Classic Championship.

Molly Jacobsen earned the win in the circle, allowing two runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Ava Tillmann came out of the pen for 1.2 frames, picking up her second save of the season.

Ole Miss (11-10) busted things open early, striking for four first inning runs to take control. With two runners in scoring position, Paige Smith opened scoring for the evening with a single down the left field line, bringing home Autumn Gillespie and Kelsha Loftin. In the very next at-bat, Abbey Latham sat back and pummeled a pitch over the fence in left for a two-run bomb, putting Ole Miss up 4-0 early.

After a pair of singles for CBU (7-13) in the third, Tate Whitley came up just shy on a diving attempt in center, bringing two runs across for the Lancers on Mackenzie Budinger's single.

The Rebels tacked on a run of insurance in the fifth, with Latham delivering a bases loaded single to score Puk from third, extending the lead to 5-2.

Ole Miss utilized some small ball in the sixth, using back-to-back sacrifice bunts to bring pinch runner Kinsey Kuhlmann across the plate to score. Tillmann collected the final five outs of the game, locking down the save to lift the Rebels to the tournament crown.

Ole Miss remains at home for a midweek tilt with Central Arkansas at 6 p.m. CT on Tuesday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The game will be broadcasted live on SEC Network +.
