Nine Rebels also Earned Recognition as CRCA Scholastic All-Americans
OXFORD, Miss. – The season may have ended, but Ole Miss Rifle junior Abby Buesseler and her teammates continue to garner awards for both success on the range and in the classroom, announced by the National Rifle Association and College Rifle Coaches Association over the weekend.
Buesseler was named NRA First Team All-American for smallbore as well as CRCA Second Team All-American for smallbore and CRCA Third Team All-American for aggregate. Additionally, nine Rebels were commemorated as CRCA Scholastic All-Americans.
"I'm honored to be represented as one of the top athletes in the nation," Buesseler said. "These are incredible awards that I'm excited to have. I'm thankful for the support I've received at Ole Miss from my coaches, teammates, and athletic staff. I wouldn't have had the season I had without them, and I'm thankful for that."
The NRA awarded the 10-best smallbore shooters with First Team status. Each shooter averaged 582.69 points or better. Buesseler became the first Rebel to earn such distinction in the three-event discipline. She joins Ole Miss graduates Shannon Wilson (2006), Keely Stankey (2012) and Ali Weisz (2017) who became First Team members in air rifle.
The top-20 athletes across the country also earned a spot on the First, Second, or Third Team along with Honorable Mention for the CRCA awards. Each tier featured five individuals apiece. It also marked the second-most Rebel student-athletes to be honored by the CRCA academically.
Buesseler was recognized by the CRCA after posting the 10th-highest average for smallbore (582.7 points) and 15th-best average for aggregate (1171.8) ahead of the Great America Rifle Conference Championships.
A native of Stacy, Minnesota, Buesseler excelled for Ole Miss throughout the 2019-20 campaign and ended the regular season as an at-large individual qualifier in smallbore for the NCAA Rifle Championships.
"I am very excited for Abby Buesseler," head coach Marsha Beasley said. "She really had a great year and this honor recognizes that. To be named one of the top ten collegiate shooters (by the NRA) is a major accomplishment."
The NRA and CRCA awards now sit alongside a growing trophy case that includes All-GARC Second Team for both smallbore and combined as well as Honorable Mention in air rifle. To top it off, the Ole Miss coaching staff recognized Buesseler as the Ole Miss Rifle Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The GARC awards were announced in late February.
A counter in every match, Buesseler set team records for smallbore-season average and aggregate total, following an 1183-point performance against West Virginia on Nov. 2. She also tied the air rifle program mark of 597 in the same match which saw the Rebels outshoot the Mountaineers in the discipline.
Consistency was the key to Buesseler's success as the Biochemistry major fired a 580-or-better in smallbore during 11 matches as a junior. Her personal-best 588, tallied on February 1 at TCU, sits just a single point shy of current Olympian and Rebel alum Ali Weisz's 2015 record.
Buesseler, senior Alana Kelly, junior Kamilla Kisch and sophomore Megan Taylor were all recognized with their third scholar award by the CRCA. Juniors Sophia Cuozzo, sophomore Erin Walsh and sophomore Jillian Zakrzeski garned their second. Freshmen Kristen Derting and Claire O'Neel each earned their first such accolade.
The Rebel nine is surpassed only by the 11 student-athletes who swept the honor a season ago. In total, 157 student-athletes became CRCA Scholastic All-Americans for 2019-20.
To earn CRCA All-Academic status a student-athlete must maintain a 3.2 cumulative or fall GPA.
