Rebel Junior Swept the Awards, Lucas Named GARC Assistant Coach of the Year
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Ole Miss Rifle junior Abby Buesseler and assistant coach Jean-Pierre Lucas brought home several awards at the Great America Rifle Conference Awards Banquet ahead of the GARC Championships last weekend.
After an impressive regular season, Buesseler garnered four total awards, while Lucas earned his second GARC Assistant Coach of the Year accolade with the Rebels. The awards were announced Thursday night at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis, Tenn.
The top-15 athletes in the GARC earned First Team, Second Team, or Honorable Mention recognition. Athletes were ranked based off the averages of eight regular-season league matches. It marked the 10th consecutive season where Ole Miss brought home at least one award at the annual event.
Buesseler was named Second Team for both smallbore and combined, Honorable Mention for air rifle, and she was recognized as the Ole Miss Rifle Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
A counter in every match this season, Buesseler posted a team-high average in all three categories during the GARC regular season (582.75 smallbore, 590.25 air rifle, 1173 aggregate).
A product of Stacy, Minnesota, Buesseler is on pace to break the Ole Miss smallbore season-average mark after eclipsing 580 on seven occasions. On a national level, the Rebel junior ranks 11th in the NCAA across all matches.
The best air rifle and aggregate performance of Buesseler's collegiate career was record-setting. On Nov. 2, she tied the school record with a 597 air rifle and established a new aggregate program mark with 1183 total points against West Virginia. Buesseler's huge score also helped the Rebels outshot the Mountaineers in air rifle and set a team mark of 2372 in the event.
Additionally, the Biochemistry major was named the Rebels' Scholar-Athlete of the Year following her combined prowess on the range and in the classroom. She was nominated by the Ole Miss coaching staff.
Lucas received GARC Assistant Coach of the Year honors for the second time in three seasons, all while guiding the Rebels. The former West Virginia All-American was key in instructing the team to seven of the top-10 scores in program history during the season.
Ole Miss also reached No. 5 in the College Rifle Coaches Association poll, a new team high, under Lucas' tutelage. The Rebels spent the entirety of the regular season in the Top 10, a program first as well.
Buesseler will continue her campaign at the 2020 NCAA Rifle Championships in Lexington, Kentucky. She will compete in smallbore action on Friday, March 13 with the first relay beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT.
