Rebel Guard Scores 19 Points on Senior Night
OXFORD, Miss. – Playing his final game in The Pavilion, Breein Tyree made sure his Senior Night was a victorious one. The senior guard scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the second half, breaking a tie and leading the Rebels (15-15, 6-11 SEC) to a 75-67 victory over a scrappy Missouri team Wednesday night.
With the Tigers (14-16, 6-11 SEC) throwing everything but the kitchen sink at him for 40 minutes, Tyree had one of the most efficient games of his career. He shot 6 of 9 from the floor, while making all six of his free throw attempts. The Somerset, New Jersey, native distributed the ball as well with a team-high five assists.
Sophomore Blake Hinson was the catalyst for Ole Miss in the first half. He matched Tyree in scoring by tallying all 19 of his points in the opening 20 minutes. Classmate KJ Buffen produced his second double-double of the season, recording 13 points with a team-high 10 rebounds. Khadim Sy also reached double figures with 12 points.
The Rebels tied a season high with 25 made free throws, finishing 25 of 33 (75.8 percent) after making their first 18.
Missouri was led by Xavier Pinson. After scoring a career-high 32 points in the first matchup of the season two weeks ago (Feb. 18), the Rebels limited the guard to 16 points and forced six turnovers out of him. Jeremiah Tilmon, who missed the opening contest between the two teams, added 12 points off the bench.
Tyree started off his Senior Night on the defensive end, picking off a Missouri pass and taking it to the other end for a layup. The points off turnovers broke a 5-5 tie and gave the Rebels their first lead of the ballgame. The sequence was part of a 13-0 run, as Ole Miss kept the Tigers scoreless for nearly five minutes, to go up 16-5.
Ole Miss maintained a double-figure lead for the most of the first half behind the hot shooting of Hinson. The sophomore knocked down four 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes. Battling down low with less than a minutes to go, Hinson went up strong and drew a foul. He got the roll and converted the old-fashioned three-point play, giving him 19 first half points. Missouri's Torrence Watson countered with five points to end the half and cut the Ole Miss advantage to single digits, 49-40 at the break.
Shooting 53.8 percent (14 of 26) from the floor and going a perfect 16 for 16 at the free throw line, the Rebels' 49 points were the most first half points in 63 games under head coach Kermit Davis. Following Hinson's 19, Sy added nine and Buffen recorded seven.
Missouri started the second half on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 51-51 with 13:57, forcing Davis to call timeout. With his team needing a spark, Tyree stepped up one final time on Craddock Court by scoring the Rebels' next seven points. After a Sy free throw, Tyree converted a tough bucket driving the lane before adding a baseline jumper to push Ole Miss ahead 63-55 with eight minutes to go.
A Tillmon layup made it a two-point game, 67-65, but the Rebels kept the lead. Devontae Shuler stole the ball at midcourt and raced to the hoop for a deuce that doubled the margin to four. Tyree added a bucket to increase the advantage to six, and Ole Miss locked down on defense for the rest of the game. The Rebels limited Missouri to shooting just 28.6 percent in the second half, ensuring a victory in the final home game of the season.
Up next, Ole Miss closes out the regular season with a rivalry matchup against Mississippi State (March 7). The Rebels head to Starkville looking for history to repeat itself after winning the first battle 83-58 in Oxford. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
