Sophomore Fires 68 (-4) in Opening Round to Highlight the Day

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The No. 42 Ole Miss men's golf team completed the first two rounds of the Lamkin San Diego Classic on Monday, which featured some of the Rebels' best and worst play of the season.

The Rebels fired a 7-under 281 during the first round, the lowest round of the spring, to sit near the lead after the first round. However, a difficult afternoon 18 that featured rain and wind led to a 308 (+20) to end the first day in 11th place at 13-over. San Francisco leads at 1-under, being the only team under par through the first 36 holes.

Ole Miss led the field in birdies with 37 on day one, 22 coming in the first round. The Rebels played the par 5s at 8-under par, recording pair of eagles along the way.

"We really showed our youth today," head coach Chris Malloy said. "We went from leading this tournament through 24 holes, to putting ourselves in the middle of the pack. There is no doubt that these guys have the talent to win these types of tournaments as we showed this morning. However, we need to be able to do a better job of handling how we handle tough conditions and not let rounds like this get out of hand. I know that these guys will respond well tomorrow."

All five Rebels in the starting five finished par-or-better over the first 18 holes, led by Jackson Suber's 4-under 68.

Suber is tied for 24th after day one at 2-over (68-78—146). Suber's first round 4-under was his 16th par-or-better round of the season and seventh in the 60s. It featured five birdies, 12 pars and a lone bogey.

Veeti Mahonen is in a tie for 31st, going 4-over (72-76—148) through 36 holes. The freshman leads the team in birdies with 10 and played the par 3s at even par.

Miller matched Mahonen on the leaderboard, shooting a 4-over on day one (69-79—148). His first round 69 (-3) was his fourth round in the 60s of the year, and was one of two Rebels to card an eagle today.

Sophomores Jack Gnam and Sarut Vongchaisit are tied for 42nd after shooting identical rounds in both the morning and the afternoon (72-77—149). Gnam's first 18 featured two eagles, including a deuce on the par-4 12th.

The final round is set for a 10:30 a.m. CT shotgun start Tuesday morning. Ole Miss will be paired with Colorado, Long Beach State and Saint Mary's (CA).
