Lane Kiffin, Nick Broeker and Keidron Smith Meet with Media
OXFORD, Miss. – The acclimation period is over, pads are on in full and the first scrimmage is in the books as the Ole Miss football team begins its second week of fall camp.
On the first day of the fall semester in Oxford, the Rebels met Monday morning for their sixth practice of fall camp and their second in full pads. Afterward, head coach Lane Kiffin, offensive lineman Nick Broeker and defensive back Keidron Smith met with the media via Zoom.
OFFENSE SHINES IN FIRST SCRIMMAGE
The Rebels stepped into Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for the first time during fall camp on Saturday. There was no tackling for this opening scrimmage, though Ole Miss did wear full pads for the first time. As for the results, Kiffin was most impressed with the production of his offense.
"It was good to get in the stadium," Kiffin said. "There were some good and bad things, like any first scrimmage. The offense probably outplayed the defense. We have a number of defensive players out for multiple reasons, so that didn't help. The quarterbacks did some good things. Jerrion Ealy had a really long run. We hit some big passes, especially to Elijah Moore. That part was good, but obviously, whenever you're making a bunch of plays, that means you're not making them on the other side."
As the quarterback battle continues, Kiffin saw positives from both of his signal-callers. Matt Corral earned the checkmark in the ball security category, but despite a lost fumble, John Rhys Plumlee still had a strong day as well.
"I thought Matt played extremely well. Hit some big plays. Was really accurate," Kiffin said. "John had a little more up and down. He did some really good things. Fumbled once for a big turnover. But both of them did some things to excite us."
GOING FOR BROEKER
After being named a Freshman All-American in 2019, Nick Broeker is already rising up future NFL Draft projections. As a true freshman, Broeker amassed 474 snaps and appeared in all 12 games at left tackle. The sophomore out of Springfield, Illinois, allowed just one sack in 213 pass blocking attempts, and that experience has him feeling much better going into his second fall camp.
"Now, after seeing what I saw last year and getting all of those reps in games, it's slowed down," Broeker said. "I know what to expect and all of those things. It's definitely been a lot easier this fall camp. There were a couple times where I shocked myself, looking back and realizing what I was able to do last year as an 18 year old."
Broeker credits several upperclassmen for helping to bring him along and find success in his first year in the SEC, including current teammates Ben Brown and Royce Newman, as well as graduates Alex Givens and Michael Howard. Now, Broeker and the rest of the more experienced Rebel linemen will prepare the next wave for SEC play.
"Caleb Warren has really stepped up a lot and so has Jeremy James. Those two guys have started to pick it up and play really good football," Broeker said. "Obviously, we still have Jalen Cunningham and Bryce Ramsey who have consistently raised the bar and gotten better every day."
B-MACK ON TRACK
No Ole Miss Rebel has earned more praise from his teammates in the media this fall than Brandon Mack. He's been almost unanimously the first name mentioned every time a player is asked which young edge rusher is stepping up as the team looks to replace its sack leader from a year ago. Last week, it was Jacquez Jones who was singing Mack's praises.
"We have people like B-Mack and Demon Clowney who have stepped up," Jones said. "It's hard to replace a guy like Sam, but they're trying their best to step up and take that spot. Brandon Mack, he's an athlete. I feel like he's doing an unbelievable job, taking on blocks, holding blocks, setting the edge."
Mack chose Ole Miss over an impressive list of suitors but didn't see the field as a true freshman in 2019. Now, the Montgomery, Alabama, native looks ready. On Monday, it was Keidron Smith who gave Mack his due, but the junior defensive back didn't stop there when analyzing the progress of the D-line.
"B-Mack has been very good. He has stepped it up, filling the shoes in pass rush," Smith said. "Demon Clowney, as a freshman, has shown very good things in the pass rush. Ryder Anderson has stepped up as a leader being a senior out there, then Tariqious Tisdale following in his footsteps. Then Patrick Lucas Jr. and LeDarrius Cox, they're also stepping up too."
