Two Rebels Earn Opportunity to Play Prestigious Bandon Dunes
BANDON, Ore. – In what has become an annual tradition, the Ole Miss men's golf team will have a presence at the U.S. Amateur. Jackson Suber and Cecil Wegener will tee it up alongside some of the best amateur golfers in the world at prestigious Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Aug. 10-16).
With Suber and Wegener in this year's field, 13 Rebels have qualified for the U.S. Amateur over the past nine years. At least one Ole Miss golfer has competed in each of those years.
The 120th edition of the event will be contested over two courses for the just the second time ever. Bandon Dunes is a par 72 that will play 7,218 yards, while the par 71 Bandon Trails measures 6,883 yards. After 36 holes of stroke play (Aug. 10-11), the field of 264 will be narrowed down to 64 for match play. Matches over the next five days will decide a champion.
Suber will begin the tournament on Bandon Trails, teeing off at 10:06 a.m. CT Monday. Meanwhile, Wegener will start at 11:34 a.m. CT on Bandon Dunes. The two Rebels will switch courses for the second round, while teeing off in the afternoon (Suber – 2:19 p.m. CT, Wegener – 3:47 p.m. CT) Tuesday.
After leading the Rebels, ranking ninth in the SEC in stroke average and earning PING Southeast All-Region accolades as a sophomore, Suber will enter the tournament as the No. 159 ranked amateur in the world. Meanwhile, Wegener will return to top-level competition after missing the 2019-20 collegiate season due to hip surgery.
