Ole Miss Men and Women Travel to Louisville This Weekend
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss associate head coach for cross country Ryan Vanhoy met with members of the media on Monday to preview the Greater Louisville Classic this Saturday.
Opening Statement
"Men's and women's cross country, we're off from competing this past weekend. We've just been getting ready for an invitational at Louisville this upcoming Saturday. We will face Kentucky and Tennessee from the SEC, Notre Dame and Louisville from the ACC. Should be a competitive meet. Notre Dame is one of the stronger programs in the ACC. Louisville as well has some really good individuals. Tennessee and Kentucky both look to have strong squads this year, so it will be good to see where we match up with some of our in-conference foes.
We've spent the last ten or eleven days just really training hard since our first meet at LSU. Last week, one of our men's athletes, Mario Garcia Romo, who won our first meet, was actually voted as the National Runner of the Week and SEC Runner of the Week. Obviously, anytime you have somebody in your program who is garnering those types of honors it's always a big deal. We are obviously very proud of Mario, I think that was announced after the press conference last week so I just wanted to make sure to touch on that this week. A really big accomplishment for him. He's obviously someone that we are looking to continue to lead us this year. Looking forward to the opportunity at Louisville."
On travel with COVID protocols
"Pretty consistent department wide policies. Wearing N-95 masks when you're leaving campus until you return. We don't have any meals inside restaurants, we take everything to go, or have it catered in. Rooming people with people they also live with normally when we are on the road so we aren't crossing any households. Just trying to be careful, I think, knock on wood, our team's done a really nice job so far. We haven't had a positive test among the cross country team yet. So, keeping our fingers crossed and trying to do the best we can."
On travel planning with COVID protocols
"It is a bit of a collaborative effort between myself, the athletic trainer, operations assistant, and manager that's on the trip trying to help coordinate the details with that stuff as well. We got a pretty good operation ironed out by now between the three of us. Having a plan before we hit the road, just being sure to communicate with the team what the expectations are when we travel just so there are no question marks once we get on the road. They've done a great job of buying into what we're asking and doing the best we can to keep everybody safe."
