Rebels Look to Remain Undefeated
OXFORD, Miss. – Coming off back-to-back road victories to open the winter season, the Ole Miss rifle team is back at home for a pair of GARC matches with No. 12 NC State and No. 2 Kentucky.
The action-packed weekend starts on Sunday (Jan. 17), with the Rebels set to shoot against NC State. The following day (Jan. 18), Ole Miss will take on Kentucky in a top-three showdown. The rescheduled match from the fall will feature two of the nation's top teams and several of the best individual athletes in the sport.
Heading into the matches, the Rebels solidly sit in third with the No. 3 smallbore, air rifle and aggregate averages in the NCAA. They also are represented by five individuals in the top-25.
Kristen Derting looks to lead Ole Miss this weekend. She is one of the top athletes in the nation this season, ranking seventh in the country with an aggregate average of 1180.0. Derting had a strong outing a week ago, pacing the field in air rifle in both matches and firing a career-high score of 597.
Junior Jillian Zakrzeski looks to keep the momentum rolling after her big performance last weekend. The Constantia, New York, native fired an 1185 in the win over Ohio State, tying the third-best score in program history. Zakrzeski ranks 13th nationally in smallbore with an average of 583.0 and 22nd in air rifle.
Also making a big impact is Abby Buesseler. The senior has served as a counter in every match this season and boasts an 1169.6 average through five contests.
The Wolfpack have yet to shoot in the new year, but they posted a season-high mark of 4673 back on Oct. 11. Addy Burrow leads the team with an aggregate average of 1174.5.
The Wildcats are led by Mary Tucker and Will Shaner, who rank first and third nationally. Monday's match will also mark Kentucky's first match this winter. They last shot against Navy on Nov. 21, firing a 4737, the top score in the nation this season.
Both matches are set to begin at 8 a.m. CT and will not be open to the public, but fans are encouraged to follow along on Twitter for live updates and results.
