Doubles Point Decides Match between No. 17 Rebels and No. 11 Aggies
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss men's tennis narrowly lost, 4-3, to Texas A&M in a non-conference top-20 dual on Tuesday.
In singles, Ole Miss and Texas A&M split three matches each. Five of six matches went to three sets, with the Rebels claiming three victories in three-set matches. In the only match to conclude in two sets, No. 62 Tim Sandkaulen came up short against the Aggies' Valentin Vacherot, ranked No. 4 in the nation.
Nikola Slavic won in his debut match of the 2020-21 season for the Rebels. Slavic defeated the Aggies' No. 33 Juan Carlos Aguilar 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 to mark his highest-ranked career victory.
Simon Junk won his first singles match of the season by defeating Texas A&M's No. 116 Noah Schachter in the No. 4 singles position. After losing the first set 6-4, Junk came back to defeat Schachter 6-3, 6-3, in the second and third sets.
John Hallquist Lithén won for the Rebels in his collegiate debut 6-2, 3-6, 6-5 (ret.), against Texas A&M's Guido Marson.
In doubles, the Rebels won one of three matches versus the Aggies. Playing doubles No. 2, Jakob Cadonau and Slavic defeated Vacherot and Barnaby Smith, 6-2. Cadonau won in his debut collegiate doubles match. Slavic and Texas A&M's Hady Habib were the only competitors to win in both singles and doubles on Tuesday.
No. 7 Finn Reynolds and Tim Sandkaulen lost their season opener to No. 48 Carlos Aguilar and Bjorn Thomson 6-2. Reynolds and Sandkaulen were 5-0 in 2020 against ranked opponents.
Coming Up
Ole Miss travels to Raleigh, North Carolina, to take on No. 13 Tennessee to start ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday. The Rebels are the third seed in the Raleigh region, with the regional winner advancing to the ITA DI National Team Indoors (Feb. 12-14).
