Rebel Women’s Tennis Topped in Match Spanning Over Four Hours
NASHVILLE, Tenn. –No. 23 Ole Miss narrowly lost 4-3 to Miami in a non-conference match on Friday.
The match between Ole Miss and Miami was decided by a highly-competitive three set competition between both programs' No. 1 singles players. Tied 3-3 overall in the match, No. 39 Sabina Machalova and No. 2 Estela Perez-Somarriba went to a third set tiebreak to decide the outcome. Machalova led the tiebreak 5-4, and had Perez-Somarriba on the brink of defeat but was unable to clinch the match as Perez-Somarriba won three consecutive points to win 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Tiphanie Fiquet, Tereza Janatova, and Anna Vrbenska won in singles. Fiquet won her first dual match at Ole Miss by defeating Miami's 87th ranked Daevenia Achong 6-2, 6-2. Janatova won over the Hurricanes' Maya Tahan in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2). Janatova's victory gave the Rebels a 3-2 overall lead in the match. Vrbenska only lost four total games in a ranked victory over No. 102 Selma Cadar.
Elysia Pool lost in her Ole Miss dual debut 6-2, 6-1 to Miami's Isabella Pfennig. The match was tied 3-3 after Pool was defeated.
The opening doubles point proved crucial to the match as Ole Miss and Miami split in singles. The Rebels lost all three doubles matches for the first time this season.
