OXFORD, Miss. – No. 23 Ole Miss (1-2, 0-0 SEC) takes on Memphis (0-4, 0-0 AAC) in the Rebels' home opener on Tuesday at 2 p.m. CT.
Ranked Rebs
Ole Miss received a top-25 ranking in the latest Oracle/ITA team poll released on Jan. 27. The Rebels earned their way into the rankings after opening the season unraked in the preseason poll (Jan. 14). This season, Ole Miss earned a 4-2 victory over Old Dominion, and lost to both No. 1 North Carolina and Miami.
Sabina Machalova
Machalova enters Tuesday ranked No. 24 in doubles and No. 39 in singles. In 2020-21 she has a won eight of 10 singles matches and eight of 13 in doubles. In singles, Machalova has faced three straight ranked-opponents to open the dual season including the No. 3 and No. 2 ranked players in her last two matches.
Alexa Bortles
Bortles, ranked No. 24 in doubles alongside Machalova, has a 7-4 doubles record in 2020-21 (all matches with Machalova). The 2018 ITA Doubles All-American opens dual season 1-2 in doubles competition.
Tereza Janatova
Janatova ranks No. 44 in doubles and has competed at three singles for the Rebels this season. She opens the 2021 dual season 2-1 in both singles and doubles. In her career, Janatova has an excellent dual-singles record of 33-10.
Anna Vrbenska
Vrbenska ranks No. 44 in doubles alongside Janatova and has competed at four singles for the Rebels. In three dual matches she is 2-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles. Vrbenska has two ranked victories this season over No. 102 Selma Cadar in singles, and against No. 45 Cameron Morra and Elizabrth Scotty in doubles.
Last Time Facing Memphis
Ole Miss defeated Memphis 4-1 to open the 2020 dual season. The doubles teams of Bortles/Machalova and Janatova/Vrbenska both earned victories over the Tigers. Machaloca, Janatova, and Vrbenska won in singles to win the match for the Rebels.
Scouting the Tigers
Memphis opens the dual season winless after falling to No. 12 Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Mississippi State, and No. 15 Vanderbilt. The Tigers won one singles match against both Mississippi State and Vanderbilt, and were swept by Georgia Tech and Kentucky.
