Women’s Tennis Shows Out in ITA Southern Opening Round

Rebels Win Both Doubles Matches and Five Singles Matches
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Two Ole Miss Rebels teams and five individual student-athletes earned round of 64 victories at the ITA Southern Regional Championships on Friday.
Ole Miss began competition at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium on Friday as all Rebels received entries into the main draw of the event. After a fine performance on Friday, four Ole Miss doubles teams and five singles players will represent the Rebels in the Round of 32 on Saturday.
Rebels teams won two of two doubles matches in the Round of 64. Doubles was scored utilizing an eight-game pro set. Kelsey Mize and Ludmila Kareisová defeated Alcorn State's Mikaela Konstantinova and Veronica Eliana Rodriguez Garcia, 8-2. Lillian Gabrielsen and Reka Zadori defeated McNeese State's Natalia Mora Ballo and Matilde Mulatero, 8-2. Ole Miss tandems Tiphanie Fiquet with Sabina Machalova and Elysia Pool with Anaële Leclercq-Ficher received top-eight seeds and had Round of 64 byes.
Ole Miss student-athletes won five of eight singles matches in the Round of 64. Machalova, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, handled Louisiana Tech's Leonie Schuknecht in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. No. 4 seed Fiquet defeated Troy's Anastasiia Khokhlova, 6-2, 6-1. Zadori blew past No. 6 seed Yu Chen from Auburn in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Kariesová and Pool both defeated McNeese State opponents in their Round of 64 matches.
Mize fell in a tough three-set match to Missisippi Tamara's Racine. Gabrielsen, Leclercq-Ficher and Rachel Krzyzak fell in their singles matches in straight sets.
Play resumes with doubles action at 9 a.m. CT on Saturday.
