Horvath Ties Career-High and School Record
OXFORD, Miss. – No. 4 Ole Miss rifle eclipsed the 4700 mark for the first time this season, posting a season-best team score by 22 points as it defeated No. 12 Akron, 4719-4669.
Lea Horvath had one of the best matches of her young career. The sophomore tied her career-high and the program record with an aggregate score of 1190. Kristen Derting turned in the next best mark in the match, just one point shy of the 1180 plateau. Erin Walsh and Jillian Zakrzeski both had solid matches, firing scores of 1175 and 1174, respectively.
Ole Miss mixed up the counters for the third time this season against Akron, the first of two contests this weekend. The Rebels rolled with Horvath, Walsh and O'Neel in both disciplines, while Derting and Zakrzeski counted in smallbore and Gratz and Lambdin counted in air rifle.
The Rebels put together a complete team performance in smallbore, finishing with a mark of 2342. Horvath fired a blistering 592 in the afternoon relay, while Derting and Buesseler led the way with identical scores of 585 in the morning. All three turned in perfect prone scores. Walsh followed with a 583, and Zakrzeski posted a 582. O'Neel rounded out the scoring for the counters with a 576.
In air rifle, Ole Miss posted the top six scores, led by Horvath with an elite 598. Derting and O'Neel finished with identical scores of 594, and Gratz fired a 593. Walsh and Zakrzeski rounded out the top six with 592s.
Akron posted a 4669 as a team (2316 in smallbore and 2353 in air rifle). Andre Gross led the Zips with an 1175, including an impressive 589 in smallbore.
The Rebels are back in action tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. CT, taking on Navy in another GARC showdown.
