Volleyball Readies for Road Test at Mizzou
OXFORD, Miss.— Ole Miss head volleyball coach Kayla Banwarth met with members of the media Monday morning as the Rebels head to Missouri for a road test against the Tigers in a two-match series Friday through Saturday.
Opening statement…
"Yesterday was a tough pill to swallow, especially when we had two match points in set three and were winning set four 20-16. Not a good way to lose but we need to figure out a way to finish sets and finish matches when we get those chances. Another big road test this weekend heading to Mizzou who is a really good team and they're young and they're building and have a lot to prove so far this year. When you view their record, it isn't quite showing how talented they are. We're excited to go battle against a feisty Mizzou team and hopefully get better and keep our NCAA Tournament chances alive. Back on a normal schedule playing on weekends now and getting to train during the week which I'm excited about. We can get after it a little tomorrow and Wednesday and start preparing for Mizzou on Thursday. Got to keep getting better and see where we can go."
On finishing matches…
"It's a mental thing. It's who wants to come through in big moments. Who wants to step up and finish matches when we have those chances, who wants the ball when the game is on the line? Our players have to step up into that mentality and to that mindset. They have to want it and they have to want the ball. We're still learning that. We have some freshman, sophomores on the court that are still learning that. It takes experience, it takes time. We can do drills in practice that are focused on finishing matches and finishing drills, but I think it's more of a mindset thing."
On the schedule of the program…
"For me I think we're right on schedule. I think starting off the season 12-0, maybe we got a little ahead of ourselves in terms of where we were in our schedule, in terms of a rebuild and the mountain we have to climb. For me, I think we're right on schedule. The SEC is obviously very tough, it's one of the best volleyball conferences in the country. In terms of rebuild we're not going to come into the conference and win every single match for finish top three in year two. It's just not very realistic, so I think we're right on track. Obviously, we don't want to lose every match we play and it's a bummer when we do lose. I think when we shift our focus to okay, we're right on track and we're better than we were last year and we're going to keep getting better I think that's a strength."
