Lignell Earns First Career Top-5 Finish, Claims Second in Individual Competition
ATLANTA, Ga. – The Ole Miss women's golf team wrapped up stroke play at the East Lake Cup in second, securing their spot in the No. 2 vs. No. 3 match play semifinal on Tuesday to determine the team championship.
The Rebels dominated in par-5 scoring on the day, shooting 10-under par to help navigate a difficult field and course to secure the No. 2 seed. Ole Miss ended the day with a total of 17 birdies, tying them with No. 1 seed Oklahoma State for most in the field.
"We put up a great fight today," head coach Kory Henkes said. "It felt much more like Ole Miss golf than it has all semester. I love seeing the birdies down the stretch which means we are grinding until the last putt drops."
Leading the way for the Rebels was Andrea Lignell, whose 1-under round of 71 secured her a tie for second on the individual leaderboard, eclipsing her previous career high finish of seventh from her freshman season.
The Gothenburg, Sweden, native sank a total of six birdies in her round, the most of any other golfer at the East Lake Cup.
Also showing a strong performance for the Rebels was junior Chiara Tamburlini, who ended her day by carding a 73 (+1) to finish tied for fourth. Tamburlini at one point saw herself tied for first on the individual leaderboard following back-to-back birdies on Holes 13 and 14, but would ultimately drop back after a double bogey on No. 16.
Following an impressive collegiate debut at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup, freshman Natacha Host Husted carried her momentum into the East Lake Cup by finishing her round of stroke play by shooting a 74 (+2). Her 2-over finish was good enough for the Copenhagen, Denmark, native to secure her first career top-10 finish, ending her day in a tie for eighth overall.
Ellen Hume, who was making her first start since the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in September, battled back following a slow start on her front nine to finish with a 74 (+2) on the day. The senior saw a trio of birdies in her back nine, helping to push her and the team up the leaderboard late and finished tied for eighth place
Rounding out play for Ole Miss was Julia Johnson, who ended her day with a 77 (+5) to finish tied for 19th individually.
Ole Miss finishes their day as the No. 2 seed going into the match play portion of the East Lake Cup, and is set to play against No. 3 seed Duke on Tuesday. Playing on the other side of the bracket will be No. 1 seed Oklahoma State, who is set to face off against No. 4 seed Arizona.
"Duke is a great team so we need to stay disciplined with our game plan and anything is possible," Henkes said. "We look forward to the challenge."
The Rebels are set to tee off in their match play semifinal against Duke at 11:55 p.m. CT on Tuesday. Golf Channel will once again be providing coverage from Atlanta starting at 2 p.m. CT.
