Hot-Shooting Rebels Power by Charleston Southern, 93-68

11/12/2021 | Men's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss men's basketball was superb from the field, draining more than 50 percent of its shots in another complete team effort as the Rebels blew past Charleston Southern, 93-68, at SJB Pavilion on Friday night.

An early 11-0 run let the Rebels (2-0) take command, and their hot shooting didn't stop there. Ole Miss shot 50.7 percent on the night and were a scorching 57.5 percent in the back half. The Rebels were 11-of-29 from beyond the arc (6-of-14 in the second half), and were efficient at distributing the ball with 23 assists on 38 made field goals. The Rebel defense was solid as well, keeping the Buccaneers (1-1) to just 25 percent from deep.

Tonight's efforts mark the first time since 1994 that Ole Miss has recorded 20 or more assists in the first two games of the season, and the first time since 2007 that the Rebels have shot 50 percent or better in two contests to open the year.

The pace was fast and furious for the Rebels all night, who were tenacious on the defensive end and in transition. Ole Miss scored 15 points off of 14 CSU turnovers and tallied an impressive 25 points off the fastbreak – which included several highlight-reel dunks from the likes of Jarkel Joiner (24 points), Luis Rodriguez (12 points), and Matthew Murrell (11 points) among several others.

"We're trying to play at a higher pace, and that'll be seen when we play against the Marquette's and the SEC's of the world, because now you'll have to be able to guard and rebound to be able to play at that fast pace," said Ole Miss head coach Kermit Davis. "We're still figuring out rotations, I really am. I think sometimes it will depend on matchups, the stretch four, the bigger four, who we may start in different lineups will change. I've always, even for my really good Middle Tennessee teams, we'd play as much as 11 guys."

Austin Crowley (11 points) picked up right where he left off in the season opener, scoring 11 points in the first half for the second straight game after knocking down three trifectas – including the capper to an 11-0 run that helped kickstart the Rebels. Crowley was limited with cramps throughout the night, but still ended up with a career-high nine assists. Luis Rodriguez was big in the first half as well, throwing down three dunks and ending up with 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals on the night.

But in the back half, it was the Jarkel Joiner show. The senior Oxford native ended just shy of his career-high 26 points, scoring 24 tonight on 9-of-14 shooting and a 4-of-7 stretch from beyond the arc to go along with a sizzling alley-oop slam on the fastbreak. Joiner was lights out in the back half, scoring 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting and two three-pointers. Joiner also ended with a career-high seven assists on the night.

"Coach really emphasizes taking care of the ball, and one thing he talked about in our individual meetings was that he wanted my assist-to-turnover ratio to be way better than last year and to make plays and get people open," Joiner said. "I feel I got way better just taking it from practice into the game and it's been working."

Ole Miss now hits the road for the first time, heading to the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic, held Nov. 18-21 in Charleston, South Carolina. The 2-0 Rebels will open against Marquette on Nov. 18, and will follow with a game against either West Virginia or Elon on Nov. 19 and a TBD opponent on Nov. 21.

Notes
• First time since 1994 that Ole Miss has tallied 23 or more assists in the first two games of the season. This year, the Rebels have tallied 23 against both New Orleans and Charleston Southern, and in 1994 Ole Miss had 22 to open against Morgan State on Dec. 1 and 20 against Sam Houston State on Dec. 3. In available records, no team through 1987-88 has had 23 or more in the first two games of the season.

• First time since 2007 that Ole Miss has shot 50 percent or better in the first two games to start the season. The Rebels opened with a 53.1 percent outing vs. UNO and followed up with 50.7 percent tonight vs. CSU. In 2007, Ole Miss opened shooting 60.3 against Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 10 and followed by shooting 50 percent exactly against South Alabama on Nov. 13.

Jarkel Joiner nearly tied his career high in points with 24, his best being 26 vs. LSU in the 2021 SEC Tournament. Joiner ended with a career-high seven assists to go along with three rebounds and a 4-of-7 clip from three.

Austin Crowley notched a career-high nine assists to go along with his 11 points and 3-of-7 clip from three. Crowley is 6-of-11 from three to start the season.

James White (6 points) and Eric Van Der Heijden (2 points) scored their first career points tonight.
