Men’s Basketball Falls in Fierce Tug-of-War with Marquette, 78-72

Rebels Next Play Loser of West Virginia-Elon on Friday Night

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Ole Miss came out with ferocity and held the momentum for most of the first half, but a torrid three-point shooting effort in the second half from a talented Marquette squad sank the Rebels, 78-72, in the first round of action at the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic on Thursday night.

Ole Miss (2-1) held early command of the game thanks to a lockdown defense and a highly efficient offensive attack, but a Golden Eagles (4-0) team fresh off an upset of No. 10 Illinois did not go quietly into the night, using a 13-of-32 three-point clip and a 17-to-6 disparity on the charity stripe to pull ahead in what amounted to a drawn-out game of tug-of-war. The wild second half featured all seven lead changes and five ties in the game, but ultimately Marquette rode the difference on the free throw line to victory.

"I thought our team for the first 15 or 16 minutes really competed at a high level," said Ole Miss head coach Kermit Davis. "We guarded them, took them out of a rhythm, and they made some tough, tough shots. They made a tough one at the end of the half that kind of got them going a bit. They shot 13-for-32 from three, we shot 6-for-15 from the line. That was kind of the difference in the game."

Ole Miss came out of the gate energized on defense, forcing two turnovers in the early going en route to an opening 8-0 run that forced a Marquette timeout at just 18:04 in the first half. Graduate transfer Nysier Brooks had the opening points of the game on a hard-fought bank-in down low, and it was emblematic of what the game would be for the next 39 minutes.

The Rebels held the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard for the first 3:17 when Darryl Morsell (22 points) knocked down the first of an eventual 13 Marquette trifectas. Ole Miss held firm, leading by as many as 12 at the 14:03 mark (17-5) following a long jumper from Jaemyn Brakefield (11 points), but from then the Golden Eagles slowly started to chip away bit-by-bit at both the score and the momentum. This culminated in a crucial buzzer-beater by David Joplin (6 points) that cut the Ole Miss lead to 36-31 at the break and gave Marquette momentum heading into the second half.

From there, Marquette shot 53.8 overall and hit seven of their 13 total threes in the back half, while holding what had been an excellent Rebel offense to just 2-of-9 from beyond the arc after going 6-of-11 from three and shooting 50 percent overall in the first half. The Golden Eagles did not run away with the game, though, as Ole Miss fought every step of the way, keeping it a game to the very end. But, Marquette's second-half 12-of-13 free throw line clip helped keep the Rebels at bay in the closing seconds.

"We have a lot of players on the team that aren't going to sit down even though we're down," said Ole Miss center Nysier Brooks when asked what the team could learn from an early test like this. "Going into the last couple of minutes they're going to fight and they're going to keep fighting until the horn goes off. I don't have any complaints with that."

Brooks was one of two Rebels to lead with an Ole Miss career-high 13 points, adding in seven boards, two assists and a steal against a Marquette defensive front that had significant trouble defending him. Jarkel Joiner also had 13 points to go along with six boards, two assists and three steals. Jaemyn Brakefield scored his most points as a Rebel, notching 11 points and five boards with two assists. Luis Rodriguez (9 points), Robert Allen (8 points), Austin Crowley (8 points) and Tye Fagan (8 points) were also key contributors for the Rebels.

Ole Miss will next play the loser of the West Virginia-Elon game in the first consolation round, which will stream online on ESPN3 with tipoff slated for 8 p.m. CT on Friday night.

"I thought we were the toughest team in the first 15 minutes, and they were the toughest team in the first 10 minutes of the second half once they had settled in," Davis said. "We just have to do everything better. We gotta be better on the ball, we gotta move the ball better. I thought the ball stuck, we settled for tough shots. Jarkel settled for tough shots, and then finally the last four or five minutes we took it to the rim. There's a lot of different areas we can get better, but we're a good team. We have a good team that just got beat by a good team tonight."
