2022 Wade Trophy to be Presented to the Best Player in Women’s College Basketball
ATLANTA – With the start of the season less than three days away, the excitement to see Shakira Austin hit the court continues as the center was named to the 2021-22 Wade Trophy Watch List.
The Wade Trophy is presented annually to the best player in college women's basketball by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. It is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women's basketball and named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen.
Austin is one of 30 on the list of candidates selected by the WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America Selection Committee, and one of five players from the Southeastern Conference.
After a strong junior season and her first as a Rebel, Austin earned Honorable Mention All-America and First-Team All-SEC honors during the 2020-21 campaign. The center looks to continue that momentum into her senior season, as the Virginia native was recently placed on the Lisa Leslie Award preseason watch list, as well as earning both SEC Media Preseason All-SEC honors and SEC Coaches Preseason First-Team All-SEC accolades.
The Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001. The 2021-22 season will be the first in which freshmen are eligible for the honor. However, no freshmen made the list.
The committee will review the list midseason to determine if additional players will be added based on their play during the first half of the 2021-22 season.
