Low Round Vaults Women’s Golf to First at Gators Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Ole Miss women's golf team fired a 279 (-1) Monday to move up six spots and take over the team lead at the Gators Invitational in Gainesville, Florida.

The Rebels rebounded from a first day 293 to tie its season-low round of 279 and sit at 572 (+12), one shot up on No. 14 UCF and No. 26 Maryland.

"I was really impressed to see the team fight back like they did today," head coach Kory Henkes said. "We dug ourselves a little bit of a hole yesterday, but they came back really strong today and showed that they care for themselves and their teammates.

"It's a tough course and the conditions weren't ideal with the wind. We were the only team in the field to shoot under par today, so I'm really proud of the girls."

Sophomore Andrea Lignell paced the Rebels for the second consecutive day. The Gothenburg, Sweden, native tied her career-low with a 67 (-3) to move into a tie for fourth place individually. Sitting at even par for the day through 13 holes, Lignell came through clutch with some big putts to birdie three of her final five holes.

Senior Julia Johnson is also in the top-10 after a second round 69 (-1) has her at 141 (72-69) for the tournament and in eighth individually. She was 3-over through her first four holes, but steadied the ship, tallying a team-high five birdies on the day. Johnson is fourth in the field in par-4 scoring (E), fifth on par-5s (-2) and leads the team in birdies (7).

Kennedy Swann rebounded from a rough first round to card an even par 70 on Monday and is tied for 22nd overall (76-70—146). Chiara Tamburlini, a sophomore from St. Gallen, Switzerland, was also in action for the Rebels and is tied with Swann for 22nd after a second round 73 (+3).

Freshman Smilla Sonderby rounded out play for Ole Miss. The freshman from Fredercia, Denmark, is at 12-over (76-76—152) in her first collegiate tournament.

Tuesday's third and final round at Mike Bostick Golf Club will begin with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. CT.
