Ole Miss Improves to 3-0 Over Ranked Teams this Season
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Unlike their previous meeting, the Rebels were tested by Missouri in the second half, but the results remained the same as Ole Miss (13-9, 8-7 SEC) used a solid defensive performance to beat the Tigers 60-53 at Mizzou Arena Tuesday evening. The Rebels iproved to 3-0 against teams in the top-25 and became the first squad since 1998-99 to knock off the same ranked opponent twice in the same season.
"That's one of the best ones we've ever had in the three short years I've been here," head coach Kermit Davis said. "We beat a real determined Missouri team…to do what we did in the second half was huge."
The Rebels shot 38 percent (21 of 55) from the floor while forcing Missouri to shoot 35 percent (20 of 57), making Ole Miss 9-0 when limiting their opponent to shoot under 40 percent. Devontae Shuler led the Rebels with 14 points (6 of 17) while Luis Rodriguez, Jarkel Joiner and Romello While each had 10 points. The latter pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Ole Miss saw 26 of their points come from the paint and held a 41-32 advantage on the glass. As evidenced by White's eight points in the game's opening minutes, the game plan was in plain sight going up against Missouri's Jeremiah Tilmon.
Ole Miss came away with points on three of their first four possessions and took an 11-10 lead heading into the first media timeout. The Rebels continued to force turnovers despite the Tigers making five of their last seven from field and held a 17-12 lead with 11:31 left in the first half.
A technical foul called on Davis allowed Missouri to tie the game two minutes later, but his team would get that lead all the way through the five-minute mark of the first half as the Tigers missed 6 of 7. The Rebels also had a long field goal drought of their own that ended with a three-pointer from Shuler near the end the half, giving his team a seven-point lead. A mid-range jumper from Robert Allen allowed Ole Miss to go into the locker room up 33-24.
The Rebels shot 41 percent (14 of 34) from the floor and with 16 points coming from the paint over the opening 20 minutes. White had 10 points while going 4 of 4 at the break, while Shuler had seven points. Allen made up five of Ole Miss' 22 rebounds. Defensively, the Rebels forced eight turnovers and multiple scoring and field goal droughts, including a four-minute field goal drought to end the first half. Missouri shot 32 percent (8 of 25) with half of their field goals coming from beyond the arc.
Coming out of halftime, a tear drop from Shuler and free throws from Rodriguez gave Ole Miss a 13-point lead. An alley-oop dunk by Mitchell Smith and transition layup by Xavier Pinson cut the Rebel lead to nine. The Tigers proceeded to pound the paint as they went on a 6-0 run, forcing Ole Miss to call timeout up 39-34 with 13:43 on the clock. The Rebels were held without a field goal for over five minutes, as the Tigers went on an 11-0 run to tie the game at 39 a piece with 11:02 left in the game.
Joiner broke the long drought with another jumper, but back-to-back buckets from Missouri gave the Tigers their first lead of the night at 43-41 with 9:05 left to play.
Both teams would trade baskets, including an alley-oop throw down by Rodriguez which put Ole Miss up by two at 50-48. Tilmon used an easy layup to tie the game at 50 before Shuler made a tough shot and Buffen added a layup to take a 54-50 lead with 1:14 remaining. Dru Smith's missed three-pointer and a steal by White led to four consecutive Ole Miss free throws to go up 58-50 with 30 seconds left. Kobe Brown knocked down a three-point basket at the top of the key, but Joiner again knocked down two free throws and put the game on ice.
The road week continues as Ole Miss heads north to Nashville this weekend. Vanderbilt hosts the Rebels in the Music City (Feb. 27) with tipoff set for 2:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
