Biringer Goes 3-for-4 in Losing Effort
AUSTIN, Texas – Ole Miss (7-7) was able to garner an early lead at No. 7 Texas (8-0) but couldn't hold on as the Longhorns responded with five unanswered runs as the Rebels fell 5-2 at Red & Charline McCombs Field.
Savannah Diederich took the loss in the circle after allowing three runs on six hits in three-plus innings. Ava Tillmann came on in relief to pitch two-plus innings, surrendering a couple of runs on four hits. Freshman Landyn Bruce also came out of the bullpen, pitching one scoreless frame with a pair of strikeouts.
The Rebels came out of the gates swinging, with Blaise Biringer and Jessica Puk starting things off with a single and a double to pose an immediate threat. Paige Smith brought Biringer home on a grounder to short but Ole Miss failed to do any further damage in the frame.
After a scoreless opening inning in the first, Texas responded with three in the second to gain the lead. Alyssa Popelka reached on an RBI infield single to tie the game before Janae Jefferson sent a two-run single to center, putting the Longhorns ahead 3-1.
Ole Miss had a golden opportunity to strike right back, loading the bases on slap singles from Tate Whitley and Biringer and a Puk HBP. However, the Rebels were unable to capitalize, leaving the bags full.
Texas tacked on two more runs in the fifth, doing all of its damage with two outs on the board. Gabby Alvarez launched a leadoff home run in the seventh but it wasn't enough as the Longhorns secured the victory.
