Johnson Paces Rebels on First Day at Gamecock Intercollegiate

3/1/2021 | Women's Golf

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Ole Miss' Julia Johnson led the Rebels Monday in the first round of play at the Gamecock Intercollegiate in Columbia, South Carolina.

The senior from St. Gabriel, Louisiana, native was the only Rebel in the red Monday, carding a 71 (-1) and is tied for 16th individually. It was Johnson's fourth straight round in which she's shot at or under par.

Ole Miss currently sits tied for ninth against a field of highly ranked squads after a team score of 294 (+6).

Johnson, who started the day on No. 9, got off to a hot start, tallying a birdie on her second hole. After a bogey on No. 14, she rebounded to birdie No. 15 and 17 to finish 2-under on her first nine holes. Johnson would play the final nine holes at 1-over to end the day with a 71. Her four birdies on the day were a team high.

Coming off her first top 10 finish of the season, sophomore Andrea Lignell sits tied for 28th overall after a first round 73 (+1). Lignell birdied two of her first three holes, but four bogies over the next several holes dropped her to over par. Despite the run of bogies, the Gothenburg, Sweden, native finished strong, carding a birdie on the par-4, No. 9, to end her day.

Chiara Tamburlini's day got off to a rough start with a triple-bogey on the first hole of the day due to some tough weather conditions, but the sophomore steadied the ship, collecting 14, two birdies and just one bogey over the next 17 holes. She finished her with a first round 74 (2) and is tied for 35th individually. Tamburlini is also tied for the team lead with 14 pars on the day.

Kennedy Swann and Smilla Sonderby both registered a first round 76 (+4) and are tied for 61st overall.

Due to inclement weather in the forecast, second round of play will begin with a shotgun start Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. CT. Third round of play will also begin tomorrow immediately following the second round and will be played until 4:45 p.m., with the hopes of finishing the final round on Wednesday. If weather forces the cancelation of the final day, the tournament champion will be decided via the leader after 36 holes.
