Mahonen’s Hole-In-One Highlights Final Round at Myrtle Beach

3/16/2021 | Men's Golf

Sophomore Aces His Final Hole of the Tournament

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore Veeti Mahonen recorded a hole-in-one on his last hole of the day, and the Ole Miss men's golf team vaulted up the leaderboard to wrap up the General Hackler Championship at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club.

The Rebels posted a final round 292 (+4), the third-best round of the day among the 15-team field. Ole Miss moved from 11th into a tie for eighth, finishing in the middle of the pack (290-297-292—879) at 15-over. NC State ran away from the field with an eight shot victory (279-278-295—852).

"Today was certainly a step in the right direction towards playing the level of golf that we are capable of," said head coach Chris Malloy. "We were way too sloppy around the greens this week to compete to win. We will get back and put in the work necessary to be successful next week at Old Waverly."

Despite seeing his streak of par-or-better rounds come to an end at nine in a row, Jackson Suber still finished in the top 10. A final round 75 (+3), on a day when the par-72 course was difficult, only dropped him one spot into a tie for eighth (68-72-75—215). He ended the tournament with birdies on his last two holes. The showing marked Suber's 10th top-10 finish in 25 appearances as a Rebel.

Jack Gnam paced Ole Miss on the final day, firing a 1-under 71. With birdies on three of the last four holes on the back nine, his opening side, he made the turn at 1-under. Two birdies countered two bogeys coming in, and Gnam became one of just nine golfers in the 90-man field to shoot under par during the final round. The strong finish vaulted Gnam 35 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 32nd at 6-over (74-77-71—222).

Mahonen ended up alongside Gnam at 6-over (72-75-75—222) following a tale of two nines this morning. Nothing went right for the sophomore at the beginning, firing a 43 (+7) on his opening nine. However, Mahonen bounced back with a birdie on No. 1 before two more at the third and the fourth, three birdies in a four-hole stretch. He ended the tournament emphatically with an ace on the par-3 ninth, using an 8-iron from 170 yards to find the bottom of the cup. It was Mahonen's first hole-in-one in his Ole Miss career, wrapping up a 32 (-4) on the final nine.

Sarut Vongchaisit (76-77-72—225) and Brett Schell (78-73-74—225) finished in a tie for 49th. Vongchaisit had his best round of the tournament, an even-par 72 that included two birdies and two bogeys. He parred his first eight holes of the day before a birdie on No. 18. Schell also added a pair of birdies, but four bogeys resulted in a final round 74 (+2).

Ole Miss returns to action next week (March 26-28), staying in-state and making its way to West Point, Mississippi for the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship. The tournament is an annual stop for the Rebels on their road to the SEC Championships.
