Volleyball Drops to Georgia in Five Sets

3/25/2021 | Volleyball

Rebels Record Season-High Nine Service Aces

ATHENS, Ga. — Ole Miss took Georgia to five sets for the second night in a row on Thursday. Despite one of their best nights from the service line this season, the Rebels fell short in a 3-2 loss from Stegeman Coliseum.

Gabby Easton set a new career mark with six service aces, the most by a Rebel this season. Ole Miss (1-19) had nine service aces as a team, the most in a match in 2020-21. Avery Bugg tied a career-high with a total of 17 digs to lead the team.

Ratliff came in hot to start the match with a hard kill to the Georgia (7-13) back row. A quick 5-0 Rebel run gave Ole Miss a 6-1 lead before the first timeout. The Bulldogs closed the gap to even the set at seven all before Ratliff and Thompson combined for the first block of the night for the Rebels to go up 10-8. Ole Miss continued to maintain a steady lead throughout the set, growing as large as seven at 20-13. With four hitting above a .600 clip, the Rebels maintained control of the set to take it 25-19.

Back-to-back kills from Ole Miss highlighted the start of the second set, as the Rebels went out early to take a 6-2 lead. Easton's strong serving continued with her fifth service ace as the Rebels strengthened their lead with a 5-0 run and Ratliff added her second block of the night to go up by eight at 14-6. Georgia battled back with two straight kills to work into the Rebel lead, yet still trailed 15-9. A 4-0 Bulldog scoring run tied up the set at 22 all, before Ratliff's fifth block of the night ended the surge to reclaim the lead for the Rebs. The two teams needed to play well past 25, as two straight Georgia kills allowed the home team to pick up set two 32-30 and tie up the match at one all.

With her eighth kill of the night, Ratliff put the Rebels on the board at the start of the third set. The two teams began to trade points back and forth with five ties before Georgia took an 8-5 lead.  A 3-1 Ole Miss run capped off by a Carvacho kill tied up the set at nine apiece. UGA broke the tie with two straight kills and continued to build a lead over the Rebels, going up by three at 16-13. Ole Miss worked its way back into the set trailing by two trailing 19-17, but Georgia was able to hold its lead, winning the set 25-19.

Georgia started off the fourth set strong with a 4-0 run to lead Ole Miss 6-1, forcing a Rebel timeout. A Sultemeier ace cut the deficit to three, trailing 8-5, before the Rebels tied up the set off of Bulldog attacking errors at 11 all. A 3-0 Rebel run capped off by a block from the duo of Thompson and Sultemeier put Ole Miss up 15-13, but UGA stormed back with a 4-1 run to take a one-point lead, 17-16. Two straight Rebel kills put Ole Miss back on top at 21-19 and after a Georgia response, Carvacho's 13th kill of the night gave the Rebs a slim lead at 23-22 with set point looming.

For the second time of the night, both teams pushed past the 25-point mark. Thompson's 12th kill followed by a block from Easton and Ratliff secured the 28-26 win for Ole Miss and forced set five for the second time in as many nights.

Ratliff's 11th kill put Ole Miss on the board at the start of the fifth set, trailing 2-1. With the match tied at four, two straight Bulldog points gave them a 6-4 lead as momentum began to build for the home team. Down 11-6, two straight kills gave Ole Miss life as it battled to stay in the set at 11-8. Ultimately, Ole Miss was unable to keep pace with the Georgia offense, falling 15-2 in the set and 3-2 on the night.
