Ryan Vanhoy Named USTFCCCA South Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year

Rebel Men Won Four SEC Titles, Scored 63 of 70.5 Ole Miss Points at Championship Meet

NEW ORLEANS – Ole Miss track & field associate head coach Ryan Vanhoy has been named the USTFCCCA South Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year, the association announced on Thursday.

Vanhoy is in his eighth year at Ole Miss and his sixth as associate head coach in charge of the Rebel men's and women's distance programs. This is the fourth time he has won the South Region assistant of the year honor after winning indoors for the men in 2016 and 2017, as well as outdoors for the men in 2015. Additionally, this is Vanhoy's ninth total honor from the USTFCCCA after winning South Region Cross Country Coach of the Year four times with the men in 2016, 2018 and 2019, and the women in 2017.

Vanhoy's men's distance runners put on a clinic throughout the 2021 indoor season. Entering the NCAA Indoor Championships at Arkansas next week, his runners own five of an Ole Miss record seven men's entries. The men's distance squad put on a powerful show at the SEC Indoor Championships last week, helping push the Rebel men to a fourth-place team finish by scoring 63 of their 70.5 total points. Ole Miss tied a program record four SEC men's titles, narrowly missing out on the first SEC distance sweep since 1999 with wins in the mile (Waleed Suliman), 3000-meter (Mario Garcia Romo), 5000-meter (Cole Bullock) and distance medley relay (Suliman, Marcus Dropik, Everett Smulders, Garcia Romo).

In total, his crew won six SEC medals and reset two SEC meet records in the mile (3:58.28) and DMR (9:29.35), with Suliman's winning record time in the mile breaking a meet record that had stood since 1976. Suliman's mile win was the sixth for the Ole Miss men in the last seven years, while the DMR title was the seventh in the last eight and the third in a row for the Rebels.

Ole Miss has ranked within the USTFCCCA top-25 of the National Rating Index each week since Week Two, when the Rebel men soared to a program record No. 6 in the nation – a record for the entire Ole Miss track & field or cross country program. At Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge on Feb. 12, the Rebel men made headlines by clocking four sub-four mile times – led by Suliman's school record 3:55.60, the No. 4 seed time entering the national meet next week.

In the latest USTFCCCA #EventSquad rankings, Ole Miss is the only school nationwide to hold averages below 1:50 in the men's 800-meter (1:49.11), below 4:00 in the mile (3:57.48) and below 8:00 in the 3K (7:57.09).
