Rebels Defeat Wildcats 4-1 to Earn Back-to-Back Top 25 Victories
OXFORD, Miss. – No. 26 Ole Miss (11-7, 7-5 SEC) won 4-1 versus No. 23 Kentucky (14-7, 6-7 SEC) in the Rebels final home match of the 2021 regular season on Saturday.
Ole Miss narrowly lost in doubles prior to sweeping Kentucky, 4-0, in singles. The Rebels won both matches over the weekend against higher-ranked opponents after sweeping No. 21 Vanderbilt on Thursday. Ole Miss has won three consecutive matches atop ranked opponents with an aggregate score of 12-2. The Rebels achieved their third three-match win streak of the dual season.
Head Coach Mark Beyers' Thoughts
"It was an absolutely great home stand for us this weekend, beating two quality teams. I'm so proud of the kids for the way they fought out there. Very emotional day today, with it being Senior Day for Anna Vrbenska, Terka Janatova and Alexa Bortles. It's hard to put into words how much those three kids have meant to this program. Just so happy to be able to send them out with a win."
How it Happened
In doubles, the Rebels narrowly lost the opening decision point to the Wildcats. Kentucky took a 1-0 lead by claiming Court 3, 6-1. Tiphanie Fiquet and Sabina Machalova leveled doubles 1-all by defeating Carla Girbau and Anastasia Tkachenko, 6-1. Bortles and Vrbenska fell in the doubles-decider, 7-5, to No. 8 Fiona Arrese and Akvile Parazinskaite in an extremely tight match.
In singles, the Rebels won all four matches needed for victory without surrendering any singles matches to the Wildcats. No. 63 Fiquet won first at No. 2 Singles. Fiquet defeated Carlota Molina Megias in dominant fashion, 6-1, 6-0. Fiquet won in both singles and doubles versus the Wildcats in her first match against her former team (played for the Wildcats as a freshman in 2018-19). No. 28 Machalova took the match lead for Ole Miss, 2-1, by defeating No. 47 Akvile Parazinskaite at No. 1 Singles. After falling behind 4-1 in the first set, Machalova won 12 of the next 14 games to defeat Kentucky's top player, 7-5, 6-1. Vrbenska extended the Ole Miss lead to 3-1 by winning in straight sets at No. 4 Singles. After also trailing 4-1 in the first set, Vrbenska won the first set 7-1 in a tiebreak over Girbau, and cruised through the second set 6-0. Reka Zadori, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week, clinched the match for the Rebels. Zadori defeated Kentucky's Maialen Morante 6-4, 7-5, to give Ole Miss the victory.
The Rebels clinched the match at 4-1 over the Wildcats. No. 110 Janatova and Lillian Gabrielsen had their matches halted in the third set versus Kentucky.
