Johnson Records 15th Career Top 5 Finish, New Program Record
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Ole Miss women's golf team shot under par for the third straight day to secure the No. 4 seed headed into match play at the SEC Championship in Birmingham, Alabama.
The Rebels used a third round 284 (-4) Friday to finish at 843 (279-280-284), the second-lowest 54-hole tournament score in school history. Ole Miss earned the fourth seed and will face Mississippi State Saturday morning at 7:50 a.m. CT in a quarterfinal matchup at Greystone Golf and Country Club.
Senior Julia Johnson led the Rebels on Friday with a 4-under, 68. Johnson finished the tournament at 11-under (67-70-68—205) and tied for fifth place individually. It marked the 15th top 5 finish of her career, a new program-best passing Sarah Britt's mark of 14 set from 1989-93.
After two pars to start her final round, Johnson tallied four birdies over her next six holes to quickly pull within one shot of the tournament lead. After a bogey before the turn, Johnson rebounded to par the par-4, No. 10. The senior from St. Gabriel, Louisiana, finished off her round with six pars, one birdie and one bogey. Johnson finished third in the field in par-3 scoring (-3).
Ellen Hume also shot under par Friday for the Rebels, with a 1-under, 71. Hume was 7-under for the tournament (68-70-71—209) and finished tied for 13th place. After reaggravating a previous injury about halfway through the front nine, Hume received treatment at the turn to attempt to finish out her round.
The junior from Whitwell, England, fought and clawed the rest of the way, shooting 2-under on the back nine, including a birdie on her final hole. Freshman Smilla Sonderby will take Hume's place in tomorrow's match play round vs. MSU.
After a rough front nine on Friday, sophomore Chiara Tamburlini rebounded to count towards the Rebel score with an even par 72. She finished tied for 36th with a three-day total of 216 (74-70-72).
Trouble struck for Tamburlini halfway through the first nine holes Friday after she went bogey, double bogey, bogey, double bogey on holes five thru eight. The St. Gallen, Switzerland, native then birdied three straight holes to steady the ship. She tallied birdies on No. 15 and 18 to get into the red on the day.
Kennedy Swann carded a final round 73 (+1) and finished stroke play tied for 36th (73-70-73-216). Swann led the Rebels in par-5 scoring through stroke play at Greystone (-6).
Andrea Lignell rounded out play for the Rebels, shooting a 75 (+3) on Friday to finish the tournament at 217 (71-71-75).
Tamburlini will get things started for the Rebels tomorrow morning at 7:50 a.m. The winner will move on to the semifinals to be held later that afternoon and will square off against the winner of the LSU, Arkansas match.
