Women’s Golf Falls in Quarterfinals of SEC Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Ole Miss women's golf team's run at the SEC Championship ended Saturday with a 3-2 loss to Mississippi State in the quarterfinals of match play.
The match vs. the Bulldogs came down to the final pairing and took 21 holes to decide a winner. In the end, MSU's Ashley Gilliam knocked off Julia Johnson 1-up to knock the Rebels out of the SEC Championship.
Johnson was 2-down after 13 holes, but rallied to win back-to-back holes at No. 5 & 6 to tie the match and force extra holes.
Chiara Tamburlini put the first point on the board for the Rebels with a 2-up win over MSU's Blair Stockett. Tamburlini, a sophomore from St. Gallen, Switzerland, won the third hole of play. and didn't look back. She birdied hole No. 9 to take the two-hole win.
Kennedy Swann garnered the other point for Ole Miss with a 1-up win over Abbey Daniel that took 20 holes to decide. Swann birdied the second playoff hole to take the decision.
Swann, a senior from Austin, Texas, jumped out to a quick 1-up lead by taking the first hole of the quarterfinals. After 13 holes, Swann led 2-up, but saw that lead fade after Daniel won holes No. 5 and 7. Swann's par put on 11 was the deciding point in the match.
Sophomore Andrea Lignell and freshman Smilla Sonderby both dropped their matches 4&3 to round out play for Ole Miss.
Ole Miss will now wait until the NCAA Selection Show on Wednesday, April 28, to see where they are headed for the NCAA Regionals. Regional host sites are LSU, Louisville, Ohio State and Stanford.
