Junior Fires 71 to Lead Rebels in Round Two
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Jackson Suber bounced back from a tough opening round to lead the Ole Miss men's golf team on the second day of the SEC Championship at Sea Island Golf Club. With the help of four birdies, Suber's 71 paced the Rebels as the Seaside Course proved to be a stiff test of golf once again.
Alabama was the only team to fire an under-par round on Thursday, vaulting the Crimson Tide six spots to the top of the leaderboard at 1-over (284-277—561). Ole Miss (299-298—597), paired with rivals MSU, beat the Bulldogs by six strokes in the second round.
After three bogeys through his first eight holes, Suber battled back starting with a birdie on the par 4 18th. Making the turn, he recorded three consecutive pars before a bogey at the fourth dropped him back to 3-over on the day. However, Suber responded by tallying three birdies in a row to get to level par. With a bogey on his final hole, the junior settled for a 71 (+1) that was a seven-stroke improvement from his disappointing first round.
Sarut Vongchaisit and Brett Schell fired a pair of 75s to follow Suber. Vonghchaisit, who sits in a tie for 44th to pace the Rebels through two rounds (72-75—147), had a two-putt birdie on the par 5 15th before adding another birdie at No. 2. Schell began his round with nine straight pars on the back side. The St. Augustine, Florida, native ended his round with three pars over the final trio of holes. He ranks fourth in the 70-man field with 28 pars through 36 holes.
The Rebels have 18 holes to rally to make the top eight and qualify for match play. Once again, Ole Miss is paired with MSU. The Rebels begin the third and final round of stroke play Friday morning (7:10 a.m. CT) off the 10th tee.
