Schell Leads Ole Miss to Begin Play in Birmingham

4/5/2021 | Men's Golf

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Redshirt-freshman Brett Schell produced a 1-under 70, one of only 10 under-par rounds on the first day of The Collegiate Invitational at the Country Club of Birmingham, to pace the Ole Miss men's golf team on Monday (April 5). After the opening 18 holes, Schell sits in a tie for fourth individually, while the Rebels are sixth in an elite field.

The Country Club of Birmingham showed its teeth in the opening round of the tournament as only one team finished under par. No. 22 North Florida grabbed the clubhouse lead with a  283 (-1), but Ole Miss found itself only six strokes back at 5-over (289). The Rebels limited mistakes on the par 4s, playing them 1-over to lead the field in scoring on those holes.

"Good day, good start for the Rebels," said head coach Chris Malloy. "You have to be patient, and we did a good job of that today. We need to do a better job of that over the next couple of days if we're going to win this thing."

Schell was 2-under on the par 4s, good enough for second in the field. All three of his birdies came on par 4s, finding them at the sixth, ninth and 14th. After beginning the tournament with a bogey, the St. Augustine, Florida, native used his patience to play steady throughout the remainder of his round. Schell recorded two birdies and eight pars over the final 10 holes to go mistake-free and complete a round in red figures. Along with being satisfied with his swing, Schell credited his putting for the successful opening round.

"I had great speed on the greens today," said Schell. "I told myself I wasn't going to get up there and power anything. My swing felt pretty good, and I hope I can continue that the rest of the way."

In a field that features some of the top golfers and teams in the country, Schell proved that he can stack up against the best during his first season in the Ole Miss lineup.

"Hopefully he sees what we've been seeing all year," added Malloy. "As a freshman, just getting out and relaxing, understanding that he belongs, an under-par round on this golf course with this field goes a long way towards making yourself feel a little bit better."

Jackson Suber acknowledged that he had a roller coaster round, as his team-high five birdies balanced out five bogeys for an even-par 71. Seeking his fifth straight top-10 performance, the stellar junior finds himself in a tie for 11th with 36 holes to play.

"I was making a lot of long putts, but I missed a couple of short par putts, so it was just an up-and-down round for me today," said Suber.

Fellow junior Sarut Vongchaisit added a 73 (+2), steadying himself after a few early bogeys. His lone birdie came at the par-4 third, and he concluded his round with 11 consecutive pars. Tallying all pars on the back nine, Vongchaisit helped keep the Rebels within striking distance.

Ole Miss looks to make a move up the leaderboard, beginning with tomorrow's second round. The Rebels' first tee time is set for 7:30 a.m. CT, paired alongside Charlotte (+5) and Virginia (+6).
