Abbey Latham Delivers Two-Run Walk Off Double in Fifth Inning
OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss (24-13, 7-6 SEC) held onto a tight one-run lead early on and blew things open late Friday afternoon, setting aside South Carolina (19-14, 0-10 SEC) 8-0 in five innings at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
Savannah Diederich had all her stuff working in the circle, allowing just four baserunners in five complete innings, striking out seven with a single hit allowed.
Ole Miss jumped out to an early lead, with Sydney Gutierrez roping an RBI double to right-center to bring Jessica Puk all the way around from first for a 1-0 lead after one.
Meanwhile, Diederich controlled things from the other side, picking up a pair of strikeouts in each of her first three innings and taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
The Rebels gave the junior hurler some insurance in the fourth, striking for four runs to expand the lead to 5-0. Tate Whitley brought in a couple of runs with a bloop double to center, plating Maddi Banks and Abbey Latham. A couple of pitches later, Paige Smith wacked a single to left to score Mikayla Allee and Whitley.
Comfortably ahead, Ole Miss put things to bed in the fifth. After Puk led off with a walk and Sydney Gutierrez singled to put runners at the corners, Blaise Biringer went the other way for an infield single to bring in a run. That set the stage for an Abbey Latham double to left, bringing in a pair to bring the run rule into effect.
