Rebels Finish 10th as Season Comes to an End

STILLWATER, Okla. – The Ole Miss men's golf team wrapped up its 2020-21 season at the NCAA Stillwater Regional Tuesday (May 18). Coming into the tournament as the No. 10 seed, the Rebels placed 10th (297-298-296—891) after shooting their best score as a team during the final round at Karsten Creek Golf Club.

"We got off to a hot start and really made a run at this thing through five holes," said head coach Chris Malloy. "Unfortunately, we gave too many strokes back. We finished strong at the end, never gave up, and that's hard to do sometimes when things aren't going your way."

Veeti Mahonen shot a 73 (+1) for the Rebels' lowest round of the day, moving 19 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 39th (+10). Birdies at No. 2 and No. 7, without any miscues along the way, got Mahonen to 2-under on the day. Enduring three bogeys over a four-hole stretch dropped him back over par, but the sophomore finished mistake-free over the final seven holes to complete his best round of the tournament.

After pacing Ole Miss through the long, 36-hole day on Monday, redshirt-freshman Brett Schell backed up his play with a 74 (+2) in the final round. That put him at 4-over (75-71-74—220) for the tournament and into a tie for 21st. Not only was that the top Ole Miss performance of the week, it was also Schell's best finish as a Rebel. The St. Augustine, Florida, native played steady at a tough golf course on the biggest stage of the season, securing the first top-25 showing of his career. During his final round, he closed both nines with birdies, including an impressive up-and-down from the thick fescue greenside at No. 18.

Jack Gnam produced his third straight 74 (+2), finishing at 6-over and in a tie for 30th behind Schell. The junior led Ole Miss in birdies with a dozen throughout the week, including five on Tuesday. Naturally, he closed the tournament with a two-putt birdie on the par-5 18th.

Jackson Suber added a 75 (+3) after a roller coaster round. He recorded five birdies and an eagle over his final 18 holes, but the difficult Karsten Creek forced miscues that prevented the First Team All-SEC golfer from going low. Suber recorded two eagles on the par-72 course over the 54 holes, leading the field.

The regional finish meant the end to Ole Miss' 2020-21 campaign, but there were several highlights to the season. The team found the record book with a couple top-10 rounds in school history, Suber earned two individual wins on his way to First Team All-SEC honors, and the season ended with the Rebels' fourth consecutive berth to an NCAA Regional. With no seniors on the squad and promising newcomers set to join the team, the future of Ole Miss Golf is bright.
