Rebels Make First Team Cut in Scottsdale
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Ole Miss women's golf team continued to climb up the leaderboard Sunday at the NCAA Championship in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Rebels posted an even par 288 during the third round and sit in fifth place (296-291-288—875) as a team headed into Monday's fourth and final round of stroke play. 24 teams were cut down to 15 after Sunday's round.
For the second straight day, senior Julia Johnson tallied a 1-under, 71, and remains in a tie for sixth place (73-71-71—215) headed into Monday's final round of stroke play. Johnson began her day with four straight pars. After a bogey on No. 5, she responded with a birdie on both No. 7 and 8.
Johnson opened the back-nine strong with birdies on No. 9 and 11. She wasn't able to get her par putts to drop on 16 and 17, but sank a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th and final hole to get into the red for the day.
Chiara Tamburlini was the big mover for Ole Miss on Sunday. The sophomore from St. Gallen, Switzerland, used a 3-under, 69, to move from 53rd place to 16th individually. Tamburlini used a team-high six birdies Sunday to climb up the leaderboard. She birdied three of the four par-5s on the course.
Andrea Lignell, Kennedy Swann and Smilla Sonderby all carded a 74 (+2) on Sunday for the Rebels.
Lignell, who is tied for 34th place, became the second Rebel in the last two days to eagle the par-5, No. 7. The Gothenburg, Sweden, native went driver off the tee and then 5-wood to knock the ball within five feet for the easy eagle putt.
After three bogies on her back-nine, Lignell went for the green from 200 yards out on 18 searching for something under par. The junior was able to get up-and-down out of the back sand trap and drained a six-foot birdie putt to wrap up her round.
Swann, a senior from Austin, Texas, is currently tied for 50th after tallying 14 pars on Sunday and is 6-over for the tournament (75-73-74—222). Swann is tied for second in the field in par-3 scoring (-2).
For consecutive days, Sonderby tied her season-best round with the 2-over par. After shooting a 4-over on holes 10 through 18, Sonderby made the proper adjustments and carded a 1-under Sunday on those same holes.
Ole Miss will begin the fourth round Monday at 12:32 p.m. CT. The Rebels will be paired with Texas and Arizona State. GOLF Channel will have live coverage Monday afternoon beginning at 4 p.m. CT.
Following play Monday, the field will be cut to the top eight teams to move on to the match play bracket beginning Tuesday, which will be seeded in order of finish in stroke play. Also, the individual national champion will be crowned after Monday's fourth round of stroke play.
