Burgio Joins the Rebels after Standout Career at Maryland

OXFORD, Miss.— Ole Miss head volleyball coach Kayla Banwarth continues to strengthen her roster heading into the fall, with the addition of graduate transfer libero Sam Burgio from Maryland.

The Eden, New York, native heads to Oxford after a four-year standout career for the Terrapins. She led the Big Ten this past season averaging 4.63 digs per set and ranking second in the conference with a total of 345 digs.

"We are so excited to add Sam to our team. She will immediately upgrade our gym in two of the areas we need to improve the most: serve receive and floor defense," said Banwarth.

"Having competed in one of the best conferences in college volleyball in the Big 10, she's going to bring a level of experience and poise that will steady our young team. I know she'll do great things in a Rebel jersey and I can't wait for her to get started."

As a senior, Burgio appeared in 18 matches, recording double-digit digs in each match and adding 10 matches with 20-plus digs. Burgio concluded her Maryland career with a record-setting performance, tying a personal-best 26 digs against Northwestern.

Coming out of Eden High School, Burgio was named the 2015 New York Gatorade Player of the Year and was also tabbed as a 2016 Under Armour Honorable Mention All-American.

Burgio joins seven other newcomers heading into the second season of the Banwarth era, slated to begin in August.
