Ole Miss Duo Drops Third-Set Tiebreak to Minnesota’s No. 29 Vlad Lobak and Siim Troost
ORLANDO, Fla. – No. 1 Finn Reynolds and Tim Sandkaulen's NCAA Doubles Championships run came to an end at the USTA National Campus on Tuesday. Minnesota's No. 29 Vlad Lobak and Siim Troost narrowly defeated the Rebels' No. 1 duo in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (4).
Reynolds and Sandkaulen fought hard to take the Golden Gophers to three sets. The Rebel duo was unable to win the 10-point super tiebreak with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line. Reynolds and Sandkaulen conclude the 2021 spring season with a 16-3 overall record. Senior Sandkaulen finishes his Ole Miss career with 92 doubles victories, third most all-time in Ole Miss program history. Lobak and Troost improved to 12-2 in 2021.
Both teams struggled on serve to begin the match. Reynolds served first and was broken by Lobak and Troost. The two teams then exchanged breaks and Reynolds and Sandkaulen tied the set at 1-1. Sandkaulen then held his serve and the Rebels broke Lobak to take a 3-1 lead through the first iteration of servers. Lobak and Troost broke Reynolds at 40-40 to break back. Both teams held over the next three games to tie the match at 4-4. The Rebels were broken for the third time in the set to go down 5-4. On the brink of Reynolds and Sandkaulen extending the set, Lobak held at 40-40 to take the first set, 6-4.
Reynolds served first again to begin the second set and held to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead. The Rebels got off to an ideal start by breaking Troost, holding on Sandkaulen's serve and breaking Lobak to storm infront to a 4-0 lead. The Golden Gophers were able to break Reynolds to draw the set to 4-1, however the Rebels held the rest of the way to take the second set 6-3 and force a crucial final set.
In lieu of a third set at the NCAA Championships a 10-point super tiebreak is played to decide the winner. The two teams started level at 2-2 through the first four points. Lobak and Troost then won six-straight points to take a commanding 8-2 lead. The lead proved to be too significant as the two teams split the next four points and the Minnesota duo took the tiebreak 10-4 and won the match.
