Rebel Golfers Awarded for Academic and Athletic Success
NORMAN, Okla. – Ole Miss golfers Veeti Mahonen and Jackson Suber have been named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), the organization announced Friday afternoon. Mahonen collected the honor in his first year of eligibility, while Suber earned the accolade for the second straight season.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically. In addition, they must have a stroke average under 76.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.20.
Mahonen has an outstanding GPA of 3.91 in two years as a Rebel, majoring in general business. This past season, he made the Ole Miss lineup for all nine tournaments and recorded a 74.44 stroke average. The Kirkkonummi, Finland, native tied for eighth at the Vanderbilt Legends Collegiate (Oct. 25-27), leading the field with 19 birdies and shooting in the 60s all three rounds (67-68-69—204). Moreover, his 67 (-4) in the opening round tied a career low. Possibly the highlight of his season, Mahonen ended the General Hackler Championship (March 14-16) with a hole-in-one. He wrapped up his sophomore campaign with a team-low 73 during the final round of the NCAA Stillwater Regional (May 17-18).
The academic accolade added to Suber's list of honors following his spectacular 2020-21 season. Maintaining a 3.35 GPA in the classroom as an accountancy major, Suber shined on the course with two individual victories, four top-10 finishes and a team-best 71.70 stroke average. The junior became the 11th All-American in school history (PING All-American Honorable Mention), while also claiming First Team All-SEC and PING Southeast All-Region honors. He shot a 12-under 198 (67-65-66) at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate (Nov. 8-10), matching the lowest 54-hole total in school history and collecting medalist honors for the first time in his career. He started the spring as SEC Golfer of the Week after becoming the medalist of the LSU Invitational (Feb. 26-28) with a 5-under 211 (71-69-71). One month later, Suber set the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship record with a career-low 63 (-9) in the second round (March 27). Carding a 65 (-5) in the final round of the SEC Championship (April 21-23), he became the first golfer in school history to record two SEC Championship rounds of 65-or-better.
Mahonen and Suber led the way in Ole Miss becoming a GCAA All-Academic Team. Both Rebels landed on the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll this season as well.
