Multiple Rebels Ready to Make a Jump
OXFORD, Miss.— With the start of Ole Miss volleyball's 2021 season quickly approaching, OleMissSports.com continues to dive into the Rebel roster as they prepare for the start of the new season.
Junior Anna Bair returns after leading the squad last season with a total of 182 kills, averaging 2.90 per set. The only Rebel in program history to earn back-to-back weekly league awards as a freshman, Bair heads into her third season after a sophomore campaign where she recorded a single-match team-high 21 kills against Alabama and added nine matches with 10-plus kills.
Youth highlighted the Ole Miss offense last season, as now sophomores GG Carvacho and Samantha Schnitta accounted for over 35% of the team's total kills, racking up a combined total of 342.
As the only Rebel to earn SEC weekly honors last season, Carvacho hopes to build off her strong debut season. The Gallatin, Tennessee, native, was the ninth Rebel freshman since 2001 to total 20 or more kills in a match, as her 20 kills against Missouri led her to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors on Nov. 23.
The team leader with 28 aces last season, Schnitta heads into year two of her Rebel career after setting numerous marks her freshman year. The right side was the first freshman Rebel to record a double-double in a season-opening match in the last 10 seasons after tallying 10 kills and 12 digs against Texas A&M. Her 28 service aces also marked the most by a freshman in a single season since 2008.
The veteran of the outside group, Lauren Thompson will provide leadership after spending some time at libero last season. Thompson ended the 2020-21 season trending up, recording a career-high 14 kills in the final match of the season at Georgia.
Newcomers Katie Corelli and Julia Dyess also look to get into the mix on the outside. Dyess will be the first Rebel from the state of Mississippi to hit the court for the Rebels since 2002. The Brandon native garnered Under Armour All-American Honorable Mention honors as a senior at Hartfield Academy.
Corelli concluded her career at Davis High School out of Kaysville, Utah, with a total of 1,221 digs, while being named 6A second-team all-state twice.
Ole Miss kicks off the 2021 season with two matches at the Troy Invitational from August 27-28. The Rebels will take on the host Trojans Friday at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN+, while Ole Miss will face off against UAB on Saturday at 4 p.m.
