No. 1 Seed Machalova Cruises to Quarterfinals of Milwaukee Invitational

Sabina Machalova and Ludmila Kareisová also Advance to Doubles Quarterfinals

ELM GROVE, WIS. – Ole Miss Rebel Sabina Machalova earned three victories at the Milwaukee Invitational, advancing to the quarterfinals in singles and also progressing to the quarterfinals in doubles alongside Ludmila Kareisová on Saturday. Quarterfinal and Semifinal matches will take place at the Western Racquet Club on Sunday.
 
Machalova, the top seed in the singles draw, earned a straight-set victory in the Round of 32 over Indiana's Alex Staiculescu. Machalova opened the match with an early break to take a 3-1 lead. After Machalova and Staiculescu both held to 5-2, Machalaova broke Staiculescu's serve gain to take the opening set, 6-2. Machalaova started slow in the second set, falling behind 3-1. She then came back to win three consecutive games and take a 4-3 lead. Staiculescu held to tie the match at 4-4 and Machalova held to take a 5-4 lead. Machalova then broke Staicuslescu's serve again to win the set 6-4 and claim a first-round victory.
 
Machalova advanced to face Nebraska's Kristina Novak in the Round of 16 and continued to win without dropping a set. She dominated the first set, 6-0, and fended off Novak in the second set, 6-3, to advance to the Quarterfinals on Sunday. Machalova will face the tournament's No. 7 seed, USC's Naomi Cheong, who is ranked No. 81 in the ITA Preseason Rankings.
 
Machalova and Kareisová earned a spot in the Quarterfinals of doubles on Sunday with a 6-3 victory over Portland's Sally Pethybridge and Iva Zelic. After falling behind 1-0 on serve, the Rebel duo won four straight games to take a 4-1 lead over the Pilots. The two teams held serve the rest of the way, and the Rebels won the match on serve. Kareisová won her debut collegiate match and Machalova won her 66th career doubles match. All doubles matches at the Milwaukee Invitational are one set, standard scoring. Machalova and Kareisová will next face winner Missouri's No. 2 seed Brone Murgett and Marta Oliveira on Sunday. Murgett and Oliveira received the No. 7 spot in the ITA preseason rankings.
 
Ludmila Kareisová fell in her Ole Miss singles debut to the tournament's No. 4 seed, Oklahoma's Carmen Corley. Kareisová won eight total games in the match, falling to the No. 39 ranked player in the ITA Preseason Rankings 6-4, 6-4.
 
Kareisová next faced Indiana's Laura Masic in a Round of 16 consolation match. Kareisová started off down 2-1, then won three straight games to go up 4-3. Masic countered, taking the next three games to win the opening set 6-4. Masic got ahead early in the second set and Kareisová could not come back. Masic defeated Kareisová 6-4, 6-2.
