Ole Miss Players Win Four Plus Games Per Set in Defeat
ELM GROVE, WIS. – Ole Miss' Sabina Machalova and Ludmila Kareisová had their tournament runs come to an end at the Milwaukee Invitational on Sunday.
Machalova, the top seed in singles, faced a tough test in USC's No. 7 seed Naomi Cheong in the Quarterfinals. Machalova had a slow start in the first set, falling behind in a 3-0 hole to Cheong. Both players held serve over the next four games to give Cheong a 5-2 lead. Machalova then made a set-saving comeback to tie the first set, 5-5. Cheong held serve and Machalova was able to hold as well to go to a tiebreak. Machalova stormed ahead, 5-1, in the tiebreak. Cheong proceeded to win six straight points to win the tiebreak, 7-5, and take the first set.
Machalova was broken to begin the second set and she went down 2-0 after Cheong held her serve. Machalova then held her own serve and broke Cheong to level the second set, 2-2. The two opponents went back and forth over the next four games to stand at 4-4. Cheong then broke Machalova to stake a 5-4 lead deep in the second set. Cheong was able to hold on and take the second set, 6-4, to defeat Machalova in straight sets.
Machalova and Kareisová narrowly lost to the tournament's No. 2 seed, Missouri's Bronte Murgett and Marta Oliveira, in the Quarterfinals. Murgett and Oliveira were ranked No. 7 in the ITA Preseason Doubles Rankings. After the Rebels went ahead 2-0 with a quick break, the Tigers broke back to tie the match 2-2. Both teams held to 4-4, however the Rebels were broken to go down 5-4, and Murgett and Oliveira sealed a 6-4 victory.

Machalova and Kareisová next compete at home for the Ole Miss Fall Invite. The event begins Friday at 9 a.m. CT and goes through next Sunday, 9/26.
