Bair and Schnitta Rack Up 15+ Kills
OXFORD, Miss.— Ole Miss capped off the Ole Miss Invitational with its fifth straight win over Northwestern State Saturday from the Gillom Center. The Rebels remain undefeated, starting the season 5-0 for the first time since 2016.
It was the outside hitters who stuffed the stat sheet as both Anna Bair and Samantha Schnitta racked up double-digit kills with 17 and 16 each. Freshman Julia Dyess accounted for eight kills in her second match as a Rebel. Setter Kylee McLaughlin accounted for 41 assists and 14 digs to record the first Rebel double-double of the season.
It did not take long for the Rebels to get started with some early hard-hitting kills, before Schnitta anchored the Rebels behind the serving line on an 8-0 run with two aces to lead 11-1. The Rebels never let up, holding the Lady Demon attackers to a -.111 clip to claim set one 25-11.
NSU brought more fire into the second set, playing tight with the Rebels as Ole Miss led 6-3 before the Rebel hitters got going. Freshman Julia Dyess recorded her first kill as a Rebel to lead 10-7, yet the Lady Demons still continued to battle through the set remaining within two at 15-12. The set remained tight until Schnitta's 10th kill put the Rebels up 23-19 with set point on the horizon. Bair's 10th kill of the day sealed set two for Ole Miss at 25-20.
The Rebels fired off multiple rockets to begin set three with Bair and Ratliff each adding kills to go up 5-2. Northwestern State fought to stay in the set, creating a one-point gap as Ole Miss led 10-9. NSU tied up the set at 13-all before a Rebel attack error allowed them to take their first lead of the day at 14-13. The Lady Demons were able to build a six-point lead to go up 20-14. The Rebels fought back to pull within four, dropping their first set of the season 25-21.
In the first fourth set of the season, Ole Miss started off slow, trailing 5-2. A 7-1 run powered by Ratliff's seventh kill and Dyess providing back-to-back kills to go up 10-6. Ole Miss continued to stay in control leading by as many as 11 at 21-11 due to a 7-0 run with three straight Rebel kills. It was a Ratliff kill that sealed the set 25-14 and the match 3-1.
Ole Miss continues non-conference play with a trip to Western Kentucky for the Holiday Inn-University Plaza Invitational Sept. 10-11. The Rebels will face off against UT-Martin and Western Kentucky Friday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. CT, respectively, and conclude their trip Saturday at 11 a.m. against Samford.
