Arianne Hartono Fought to the Finish in Major Main Draw Debut

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – Ole Miss alum Arianne Hartono lost 6-2, 4-6, 3-6 to world No. 60 Amanda Anisimova in the first round of the Australian Open on Sunday. Hartono became the first Rebel alum, male or female, to compete in a major main draw since 2009.

2018 NCAA Individual Champion Hartono put forth a strong effort in her first major round of 128 match. Hartono pushed former top-25 player Anisimova of the United States to three sets. The match lasted 1:44.

"It was a dream come true to have the opportunity to play in one of the biggest tournaments in the world," Hartono said. "Being able to make it as far as I did tell me I can be very proud of myself and my team. And, it makes me hopeful for what's to come the rest of this year."

The Rebel alum got off to a blazing start in the match, quickly taking a 4-1 lead in the opening set. After consecutive holds, Hartono claimed the first set 6-2. In the first set Hartono only had five unforced errors to Anisimova's 16.

After both holding to 2-2 in the second set, Hartono broke Anisimova's serve to take a 3-2 lead. The two opponents exchanged games and Hartono led 4-3, two games away from victory. Anisimova rallied to win the next three consecutive games and win the second set, 6-4. The match transitioned to the third set with everything to play for.

The third set started off well for Hartono as she immediately broke Anisimova's serve to take a 1-0 lead. Midway through the third set Hartono and Anisimova leveled at 3-3. Anisimova then took three games in a row, and won the third and final set, 6-3, to defeat Hartono.

Hartono reached the main draw of the Australian Open by winning three consecutive matches in the tournaments' qualifying draw.

Hartono, ranked No. 191, has a career-best individual ranking of No. 187 in singles. The Meppel, Netherlands native received 50 total WTA ranking points, 40 for qualifying and 10 for reaching the main draw first round.
